An unnecessary TV show sequel. What a surprise.

    Just think....

Every so often, Selleck can put in a cameo as he finishes his guide to becoming "a world class private investigator".

It might need some type of Higgins mojo.

This is one of the lamest attempts at revivals and sequels that gets used once or twice a decade.

"Remember that show you used to love, about that character you used to love?"

    "Yeah!"

"Well, this is about their KID!"

    "Oh..."

Always thought of the show as a poor man's Rockford. Some of the charm; none of the wit or intelligence and some fairly standard TV cop stories. Never understood why it did so well.

I disagree. It was in the same league as Rockford IMO, with equally charming characters, if not more so, humor and of course great locations and a classic Ferrari. One of the classics. But this 'revival' is a travesty.

Women were gaga over Tom Selleck back then. My wife has confirmed this.

Ah common guys. Did you read this part of the article?
friends? beaches? seedy underbellies? Modern espionage. Not old espionage but modern espionage. I love this show already.

If that doesn't scream best show ever, then I don't know sh i t about TV and believe me I know sh i t about TV!

    :)

Never liked the original. Always thought Magnum was a total dick to Higgins.

According to the article the production company went through Universal's catalogue to find older projects they could reboot. That pretty much sums up the level of creativity the studios are willing to invest in these days.

Luckily for them, Magnum had a daughter and that was their way in, for the reboot.

I'm guessing it'll have the generic look all these type of shows have as well with interchangeable characters that you could pop into any other show and not miss a beat. :)

From what I recall, the original series was created to make use of some expensive sets that had been constructed for Hawaii Five-O after that series was cancelled. There was even an offer made to Jack Lord to reprise his role as Steve McGarrett in a cameo or limited appearance basis on Magnum, P.I.

However, Mr. Lord declined and pretty much disappeared from the public for the rest of his life.

No doubt you're right. Your description reminds me of the Hawaii-5 O reboot. It's mostly just borrowing the name... and location. I think both of the original shows (Magnet, as my elderly step-father used to call it and 5-O) had their own charm, mostly because of the characters, but I think the new one will be fairly predictable.

Bad idea, but then I never cared for the show beyond Selleck's light comedy touch. Not too far removed from Charlie's Angels for women, imho.

The comedy got really silly the longer the original series went on IMO.

As mentioned I think the show will have its share of women in bikinis but that still won't make me watch it.

Wonder if they approached Tom Selleck for occasional appearances? If so I suspect he would probably pass.

They did reference him at least once, apparently Minor Mention: "Hawaii Five-O" and "Magnum, P.I." »
