Just rewatched this tonight. Probably haven't seen it since it came out 40 years ago. At the time I was disappointed, having recently read the book, but seeing it again without the book so fresh in my mind, it's a good film. It would be nice to think that the NYC police department has cleaned up its act since then. One could only hope.

  2. Its a great story but Al Pacino kept dressing up weirder and weirder throughout the movie. At one point he wore a Pirate shirt with big hooped earings I think.

I saw at the movies when it was released and liked it a lot but haven't watched it in years. Might be time.

If you would like to discuss the movie, that is fine, but any discussion about New York's finest, crime, corruption, etc. will close down the thread.

    thanks!

He also did Dog Day Afternoon, which is another fine example of what I refer to as the "post-apocalypse" New York City films.

Midnight Cowboy was another great NYC based '60s film (and Elephant's Memory music in the soundtrack is a huge bonus). I love the extras loaded DVDs of things like this, if they've put ones out for Serpico or Dog Day I'd be very tempted. Remember the original Taking Pelham 123?

A lot of good location work - specifically the shots of Lewisohn Stadium, before it was demolished.

I got a chance to see it in a New York City movie theater several years ago. Great fun with the audience reactions!

I watched the movie several times as a kid on TV, heavily edited. Then when I was in my 20's, I was dating a girl and talked her into renting the movie, and WHOA, was I blindsided by the language! I had no idea that it was on the Glengarry Glen Ross level of profanity! It was a very awkward viewing, to say the least!

Still one of my favorites though, but as others have said, the hippie-cop outfits did get a bit over the top.

Serpico was a great movie. It was before Al Pacino sort up "jumped the shark" if you will. He did a masterful acting job, you believe he really *was* Frank Serpico.

Panic in Needle Park, Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico, Godfather I & II. That alone is a pretty amazing run of films. His restraint in Godfather II is what gives his character such power.

I reckon Prince Of The City and Serpico would make an excellent double feature...
