    Sex Pistols / ’76/77′ a new four-CD box set – SuperDeluxeEdition

76/77 is a new four-CD box set featuring recordings of the Sex Pistols before the release of Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols in 1977.

The set features 80 alternate versions of tracks recorded between May 1976 and Sept 1977 and while most of these have been issued on various previous collections, the record label have still found eight previously unreleased versions.

The band formed in the summer of 1975 but it would be some 10 months before they first ventured into a recording studio with Chris Spedding, on May 15th 1976 at Majestic in London. Later that summer they’d record first at Decibel and then at Riverside with Dave Goodman and subsequently at Landsdown and Wessex later that October.

76/77 features 80 tracks (click image to enlarge)
All these early recording sessions are included on 76/77, along with the EMI sessions at their Manchester Square studio. EMI dropped them, of course, in January 1977 and further sessions with Dave Goodman at Eden and Gooseberry studios. Around this time Glen Matlock left to be replaced by Sid Vicious. Recording sessions continued after the A&M signing/dropping of the band in March the same year and the in May Virgin finally signed the Sex Pistols.

There was plenty more recording in August and September of 1977 leading up to the release of Never Mind The Bollocks... which eventually came out in October 1977.

The 76/77 four-CD box set is released on 24 September 2021. SDE Members can ‘rate this release’ at the top of the page.

Shame they couldn’t just release the 8 previously unavailable recordings without you having to buy everything else all over again :sigh:

Seriously. As a huge fan of the Pistols since I was 9 or 10, I have a strong impulse to buy this, but honestly, I’ve heard tons of demo stuff before and didn’t think that any of it was as good as the official versions released in the band’s lifetime. Somehow, I’m still intrigued nonetheless.

I'm hoping the set has good liner notes finally clearing up what was recorded where and when and who played

This looks really cool. I am hoping this makes This is Crap, the Spunk CD and No Future U.K. unnecessary. I have SexBox and the NMTB big box already.. I like the idea of having all of this in one place and hopefully mastered well and at the right speed. It seems that most sets like this miss something here and there. Hopefully this will be good.

Looks like the box is same size as the 4 CD live box and the interview set. I did get the live set but not the interview one. You have to draw the line somewhere.

Those two different takes of No Feelings from the Spedding April '76 demos are unreleased, actually I've never heard of their existence.

Also it seems that we'll have a different mix of the Goodman July '76 demos.

I'll have to take a good look at the previously available rough mixes and outtakes from the Chris Thomas '77 sessions to see if there's anything different in this box.

    I'm in.

Ultimately, they're fascinating. Such a huge impact in such a short time, that it makes anything previously unheard interesting, especially studio recordings along with any footage. I don't think I'll be buying this, I won't be able to afford it, but I certainly want to hear it at least once.

Very true but a lot of us still buy it. This does look like a nice, logical presentation. It is truly for hard-cores that want it all. NMTB and a few odd tracks are all most would ever need if one needs anything.

I don't mind this at all, it's music history in the making. Every bit as valid as things like The Pet Sounds Sessions. It's just incredible that so many albums have been released, but they had less than 20 original songs and were only in existence for about 18 months.

I have seen this posted in a couple of different locations with the always "clever" "Ever had the feeling you've been cheated? " quote attached to it.

I only have the 2 CD deluxe Never Mind The Bollocks set, so I might pick this up if the quality is good.

  23. Unfortunately...

this Century has not been kind to releases from the band*:
Album list - Dynamic Range Database
"guessing" the "2007 DRR #13" release is actually an old Japanese disc w/pre-emphasis.

The SA-CD had a 'clean' sound IMO; just was a bit [p.i.] too 'dry' to enjoy the entire album in one sitting & too harsh when cranked.

If similar to the mid-80's masterings, both Virgin & WB [therefore crankable], will purchase.

    * not basing my evaluation strictly on DRD #'s; only using them to explain/identify my specific listening preferences. Digital DR Ratings have matched my tolerance of compression for like a decade. Modern Mastering never taking away my enjoyment of the music, only my enjoyment of playback.
    i.e.
Really like the "The Black Angels", just don't enjoy playing them on CD:

seeing all that red everyone should understand why.

  24. So this FINALLY complies all of the pre-Bollocks demos that have been spread over dozens of albums over the past 40 years?
