Small Faces box set

I'm going to get it anyway. I need all that stuff.

no marbles with small faces on them? what are they thinking! at least with the clash box set they include all music!

 

I'm so tired out pointing out the obvious flaw in the standard approach to box sets, which is to try to appeal to everyone by including all the hits and then throwing in some rare or unreleased material for the hard core fans. The simple fact is that in the vast majority of situations, a casual fan isn't interested in a multidisc box set. So basically, you're just screwing the real market for these collections - the hard core fans - by loading up the discs with previously released material that they've already purchased many times over. That's particularly true with the Small Faces. Odds are that most people who would spend the small fortune they're charging for this set have already bought the deluxe reissues. The smart thing would be to include remixes of all the previously released material - assuming the multitracks still exist. At least then we'd be getting something new. Maybe that's what they're doing, but I wouldn't count on it.

 

Means that 1 cd is previously released material. The suposedly new things are on the other 3

"Wow"! Is that all they can come up with?

 

Actually I really like what I see in track listings. (Forget the junk in the box) I'm still in with that many singles & outtakes.

 

The two tracks on the list that interest me are "(If You Think You're) Groovy ['The Lot' Version]" and "Me You and Us Too." Is this the version of Groovy with Steve Marriott vocals that was rumored to exist? And is it true that Me You and Us Too is simply an early version of Wham Bam Thank You Mam?

 

It is. I have it on another compilation, along with some of the other "rarities" here.

I'd be curious to hear some of this stuff, but certainly not for the price they're asking here. You can only go so far with the alternate takes and the tracking sessions. They could have just released the essential rarities here in a two disc set, or they could have included them in the last batch of reissues, but obviously their intent on squeezing every last dollar out of a dwindling fanbase, like a lot of other classic bands these days. Disappointing.

 

I thought their cover version of Be My Baby (left of of Ogdens) was supposed to be on here.

Me, sadly, also. If there were a remote chance that they'd take a different approach to the remastering/SQ than they did on last year's deluxe doubles, i would at least consider it for that reason, but i know there's zero chance of that happening.

 

Yes, that is a shame. My guess is that this and the rumored Steve Marriott vocal version of "Groovy" do not exist anymore, if they ever truly did. Maybe they'll turn up on the upcoming Autumn Stone reissue, but I doubt it.

Yeah, I wasn't even considering this purchase but now I'm salivating over the track list. I LOVE session outtakes. And alternate mixes (when they're different enough from the originals). The only thing giving me pause -- sound quality. Guess I'll wait until someone here posts a review before committing.

 

I'm glad to see the comprehensive Immediate singles and EPs disc. The rest looks like it is aimed at collectors, and well, isn't that what most of us have been bitching about here lately? We want new material, and something different from the Deluxe Editions, for our boxset dollars. It's like it's 20 years ago, and we are being offered multiple takes/outtakes/& alternates from a favorite band, boxed and priced sky high ...except this will be a legal release.

I'm not wanting to pay extra for all the nick knacks and reissued vinyl, but the music, I want to hear. Don't know whether I'll prefer demos and 1st takes, or some version before final overdubs, but I'm anticipating finding a few new favorite versions for some of these songs. It will be like discovering Strawberry Fields Forever take 4.

That's my feeling towards it,hope it will be sold on a wider markert some time down the line.
