Did Paul play most of it? Other than Something and Sun?

I do know that Paul plays the first solo on The End, and starts off again after George and John play each time.

I remember the "underwater" Octopus' Garden solo, but that sounds like George. I Want You, with that long drawn out guitar? Did you do an internet search? It sounds like a question that would have been asked of Paul?

Of course, the problem is that the Beatles themselves seem to forget who did what. I thought that the segment in the DVD Anthology where they are discussing "Golden Slumbers" was shocking. Paul is sitting there saying he played bass on this track when anyone who read Lewisohn's book knew otherwise. It gets resolved only when George Martin points out that it would have been impossible for him to have played both piano and bass live on take one.

I believe it's George on the medley stuff (playing his rosewood Telecaster), Paul having his hands full with piano & bass. Apart from "The End", of course, which is a glorious tag-team between J, P & G.

John played the solo on I Want You.

McCartney is thought to have played a lead guitar on You Never Give Me Your Money but it was also thought to have been wiped and George's effort replaced it.

i think the solo at the very beginning of i want you is harrison, but of course the remainder of leads in the song are by john

Not counting the trading off solos on The End, Paul doesn't play ANY solos on Abbey Road.

Come Together: George; John plays the grunge-style riffing
    Something: George
Maxwell's Silver Hammer: No solo; Moog - Paul
Oh Darling: No solo; Lead guitar by George and Paul
    Octopus's Garden: George
I Want You: Mostly John, with George. They tracked all the guitars for the song.
Here Come The Sun: All guitar work by George; Moog - George
Because: George - Moog synthesizer solo
You Neve Give Me Your Money: Distorted Guitar - John; Chiming Guitar - George
Sun King/Mean Mr. Mustard : George
Polythene Pam/She Came In Through The Bathroom Window: George and Paul play lead, no solos
Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight: George lead guitar and bass
The End: Paul, George and John trade solos
    Her Majesty: Solo Paul

I have no evidence to support this, but I've long felt that a good arguement could be made that this could have been all Paul & Ringo. Aside from Ringo's drumming, this song could have been on the McCartney album as is.

I read somewhere that for "The End", they played the following instruments:
John: Epiphone Casino, Paul: Telecaster, George: Les Paul.
It certainly does sound that way.

Thanks for the info Ron. I always assumed that George and John did most of the guitar work on this album and it's good to have that belief reinforced. By the same token I've always assumed that most bass and piano on that album is Paul.

I think this is one case where the Rock Band game may be accurate, at least for "The End", anyway.

Yeah. If people can't tell who is playing what by style and sound of the guitar then they should not be talking about The Beatles. I don't need this to tell me who plays what.

There does seem to be quite a bit of revisionist history going around in the recent past which paints Paul as some sort of immortal action figure who was single-handedly responsible for every good bit ever committed to tape on Beatles recordings. ;)

Add all the parts with the leslie sounding guitar parts were by George except on "Because" on which John doubles what George Martin was doing on the electric harpsichord. "Polythene Pam" has a guitar solo in which I think it was George also.

Actually, as the above video proves, Paul can switch from bass to lead guitar and then to piano in less than a millisecond.:D
