In Thunder Road Springsteen says..."Roy Orbison's singing for the lonely".....meaning ...Only the Lonely.

This is the one I was thinking of, but I never knew it was Brook Benton. It's inexplicably absent from my CD of Brook Benton's hit records.

John Stewart - "People out there turning music into gold." After over a decade as a cult figure, he finally turned music into gold with a song about it.

    So I'm lying here
Just staring at the ceiling tiles
And I'm thinking about, oh what to think about
    Just listening and relistening
    To Smiley Smile
And I'm wondering if this is some kind of creative drought

    Because I'm lying in bed
    Just like Brian Wilson did
Well I am Lying in bed
    Just like Brian Wilson did

    Mose Allison - Top Forty

From his 1987 Blue Note album "Ever Since the World Ended".

    Truthful and ironic.

"When I make my top forty, big beat, rock'n'roll record
Everything is gonna be just fine
When I make my top forty, big beat, rock'n'roll disc
I'll be the record company's valentine"

The Temptations - Superstar (Remember How You Got Where You Are)

Released as a single in late 1971.
The song is a jab at the two former Temptations members David Ruffin (who had been fired in 1968) and Eddie Kendricks (who quit the group in early 1971).

    "Superstar, good God
    Enjoy your champagne and caviar
And your chauffeur driven fancy car
But remember how you got where you are
Oh ho ho, 'cause the same folks that made you
Mmm-hmm, you better believe they can break you"
