Today I heard Neil Sedaka's old hit "Bad Blood" and was surprised to find myself drumming along to it. I finally realized why - it's got that Bo Diddley beat. You know the one, it's the three-long-beats-and-two-short-beats rhythm. This never fails to set my feet a-tappin'.

It got me thinking that it would be fun to compile a list of songs that feaure that rhythm.

    Here's a start:

    Bo Diddley - Bo Diddley
Buddy Holly - Not Fade Away

By the way, which one was first? And were these the first rock and roll records to feature that beat?

    Comments and contributions, please.

    Chris

That's a really primitive beat...almost tribal. Ain't it great?! It shows up nicely on the Strangeloves' "I Want Candy". It's on various versions of "Willie And The Hand Jive", too. That beat used to show up on lots of songs. :)

It started in the 1940's by bandleaders such as Xaviar Cugat.......

Bo Diddley was the first to give it a real personality, hence the nickname "the Bo Diddley Beat". His signature songs (Mona, etc.) all use it. He tuned his guitar to the E chord so he could go up and down the neck with that "falling off a building" sound. DrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrBoom. Lots of Fender Tremolo.

Carrot, I have that CD as well and it's a gas!

"Cherokee Dance" is one of the greatest obscure songs that I've ever heard.

Car Jamming (off the Combat Rock album) - The Clash; a little slower and with slightly different accent/syncopation, but it resolves to the Bo Diddley beat no problem

...just remembered: Please Go Home - Rolling Stones (off Between the Buttons - UK version, at least!) A GREAT 'slightly psychedelic' freakout take on Bo's beat...

The Smiths' "How Soon is Now?" is probably the most famous 80s variation on the Bo Diddley beat. Heavy flange and phase effects as well as guitar accents analogous to Bo's runs down his fretboard make it a pretty unique sounding homage.
