If I was to ask for musical milestones, I would have written that listening to Nowhere Man at a local store in '81 solidified my love for the Beatles, and listening to Quadrophenia in '82 soldified my love for the Who.

But that's not what I'm asking for.

My example is Black Day in July by Gordon Lightfoot (the original United Artists version). I first heard the song when I was about nine or 10 years old — my father bought our first stereo around that time (1973 or so) and he bought a K-Tel comp of Lightfoot's UA recordings on cassette. The first song on it was Black Day in July and it caused me to ask what the song was referring to — I had pretty much no idea of recent U.S. history at that time, so I didn't know about the riots of the late 1960s. That started me on my road to more historical and political awareness.

    Other examples?
