Massive Attack "Inertia Creeps". On a large system it's physically threatening.

Terry Bozzio on Jeff Beck's "Stand On It". I remember hearing it on the radio for the first time back in 1989 and turning in up. Love the drum sound, especially the thud of the kick.

The song. The album is great though.

"Easy Lover" by Philip Bailey...or really a Phil Collins drum-track with some singing in the background, really!
The drumming of Mick Fleetwood on the 45rpm 2LP of Rumours (nice mastering! :righton:) has that nice, low punch too! On tracks like "Dreams" and "You Make Loving Fun" it's fun to hear all these little accents and breaks!

While it may not stack up to some of the "punch" of later-recorded songs listed here, Dee Dee Warwick's "Foolish Fool" from 1969 is worth noting, first, because it's a killer song and Sammy Creason's drums leap out of the speakers, and secondly, because, according to John Paul Jones, the song was the inspiration for Zep's "D'yer Mak'er," their attempt at recording a song specifically designed to highlight Bonham's drums with the kind of punch we talking about here.

I love huge sounding powerful drums. Weak sounding and boring drumming makes rock boring( AC DC).

Not a big John Mellencamp fan but Kenny Aronoff (sp?) is a hard and tight player. Plenty of snap and kick on loads of John's tunes.

Max Weinberg on Born in the USA title track.

Mick Fleetwood on What Makes You Think You're the One - a great, spontaneous attack, really lays into it in the last verse.

And I've mentioned it several times in other threads but I would direct anyone to Ian Paice's tour de force on Burn. It's an avalanche. Really goes head to head with Ritchie's guitar riff, which is saying quite a bit, considering what an incendiary powerhouse of a riff it is.

Led Zeppelin - When The Levee Breaks
Rainbow - Stargazer - Powell makes a lot of noise on this track. In fact the whole Rising album has him beating the hell out of his kit.
Emerson, Lake, & Palmer - Knife Edge
    Jeff Beck - Sling Shot

bit of a threadshift, but I remember buying this album as a new release, taking it home, putting it on the table only to have a skip right as the vocal started in "Sitting."

I still "hear" that skip every time that song comes on...

I still "hear" one throughout when "Boy with A Moon And Star On His Head" comes on.
My copy was bought used. :)

That's what I thought of, too. The drums are really omnipresent.
Same goes for Landing On Water by Neil Young (I guess Jordan is the drummer on it also).
