I was listening to a mix disc in the car at lunch and Simon & Garfunkel's "America" was impressing me with those harmonies. What's some songs that come to mind that have superb harmonies? Here's just one:

"If I Needed Someone" Beatles (the "ahhh's" during the instrumental break are heavenly)

Lots of Byrds stuff ... "Mr. Tambourine Man," "She Don't Care About Time" ... too many to mention.

CSN's "You Don't Have to Cry." I just love the particular way they blend on that one.

And something from the last decade just for kicks ... "Ain't That Enough" by Teenage Fanclub, my current Favorite Song.

Man, I love the first few tracks on Songs From Northern Britain: "Start Over", "I Don't Want Control of You", and the one you listed. Great band but I haven't listened to them since that album.

Speaking of Byrds, a big favorite of mine is the Chris Hillman track "Have You Seen Her Face". I think that has some pretty good harmonies in it too.

Yeah,"You Don't Have to Cry",that took the Simon and Garfunkel formula and took it to another level.I think that first CSN album was the apex of that harmony style from the Hollies and the Byrds as well.Helplessly Hoping was another beautiful example of that as well. Those three voices created magic together on that album....then came Neil!!!That's another story for another day!!

Oh yes, "Have You Seen Her Face" is a great one. You can really hear David Crosby's contribution on that.

That Teenage Fanclub album is really fine. I just picked it up a few weeks ago in a used-CD bin, and I'm quite impressed. Sunny, unpretentious, catchy, harmony-laden pop ... There's not enough of that around.

Does "And I Love Her" have vocal harmonies?? I don't remember any ...

They sure did. I love the stuff they did later with Neil, but that first CSN album has a purity and beauty that's just out of this world.

Here's another harmony-laden song as an example: "Found My Way To You" by Stealer's Wheel, from the 1975 album "Right or Wrong".

I know they don't get a lot of respect around here, but i quite like The Thorns' tune "I Can't Remember". Sweet harmonies in that one.

For female vocal harmonies, my two favorite songs have to be:

Go Where You Wanna Go - The Mamas and the Papas
The More That I'm Around You - Jules Shear, w/Susan Cowsill & Vicki Peterson

Some Kinks' stuff, the greatest being the harmony vocals in Waterloo Sunset by Rasa Davies and Dave Davies.

Many Grateful Dead tunes have great vocal harmonies, especially their acoustic stuff from Workingman's Dead and American Beauty. . . Uncle John's Band, for example.

Finally, a little soul in this place. Man, this place was so white. Dylan, Lennon-McCartney, etc... were all listening to Motown, Stax, and country music during the 50's and 60's.

Here is ten off the top of my head:

    1. I Only Have Eyes for You-Flamingos

    2. At the Hop-Danny and the Juniors

    3. The Way You Do the Things You Do-Temptations

    4. Bernadette-Four Tops

    5. One of a Kind Love Affair-Spinners

    6. Leader of the Pack-Shangri Las

    7. Flowers on the Wall-Statler Brothers

    8. Daddy Sang Bass-Johnny Cash with the Carter Family and Statler Bros.

    9. Cathy's Clown-Everly Brothers

    10. Jimmie Mack-Martha and the Vandellas
