    Killing Me Softly

Roberta Flack and the Fugees both scored hits with their covers of Lori Lieberman's unsuccessful original. Not surprising that a paean to Don McLean would benefit from a touch of soul. Here's the original:

    I Say A Little Prayer

Both Aretha Franklin and Diana King had top forty hits with their covers of Dionne Warwick's original version of the Bacharach/David classic.

'I Heard it Through the Grapevine'.

Gladys Knight & the Pips released the original. Marvin Gaye obviously had massive success with it, and CCR had modest success with it in 1970.

That's not really famous. I would say I'm knowledgeable when it comes to music but I didn't know they recorded it till I heard With The Beatles album a couple of years ago

Don't people read and understand the OP's thread title?? TWO successful cover versions! This does NOT include the original hit! So "Wild Thing" & "Jolene" don't count. Plus Jimi's version of "Wild Thing" wasn't a hit (was it even a single?).

    Also:

Wet Wet Wet: #1 on the UK singles chart in 1988.

    And:

The Beatles: #63 on the UK singles chart (with Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band) in 1978!
