Both are two of my favorite albums but I am still not entirely clear on the full story behind the recording process. I mean I know musicians who worked on the records but who actually laid down what parts for each song?

Let me know if you find out. I know Bobby Womack played some guitar on Riot.

My understanding is that the sessions for Riot in particular were so layered and protracted that there could have been multiple musicians playing the same part at different sessions, and no one can tell whose part was used. Certainly tallies with the urban legend of Sly's backing vocalist seduction technique...

I thought that the band was pretty stable by the time of Fresh, with Newmark on drums and Sly as the bassist on most tracks.

As for Riot, I just enjoy it.

I know Sly played bass on If You Want Me to Stay but I am not too sure about the rest; it was either him or Rustee Allen. Larry has also said he was on Que Sera and If It Were Left Up To Me.

95% of Riot was Sly and this guy.

"In Time", "Let Me Have It All" and "Keep on Dancin'" are Rustee. I'm inclined to take Larry at his word. The other six tracks are Sly. Wish I knew more than that.

IIRC, Miles said (I believe this was in his Autobiography) he never participated in the recordings. Him and Sly just did some coke together and then he left.

Although rumours say differently, Riot was mostly recorded by Sly himself.
The only persons that play on the album outside the band are Billy preston, Bobby womack, Buddy Miles & Patryce Banks.
But the core of the album is Sly by himself

Interesting, thanks. Do you know which tracks they played on? I know Billy Preston was on Family Affair, and Bobby was singing with Sly on Just Like A Baby.

This is what I got for the bass line-up:

    1. Luv N' Haight - Sly
    2. Just Like a Baby - Larry
    3. Poet - Sly
    4. Family Affair - Sly
    5. Africa Talks to You 'The Asphalt Jungle' - Sly
    7. Brave & Strong - Sly
    8. (You Caught Me) Smilin' - Larry
    9. Time - Sly
    10. Spaced Cowboy - Sly
    11. Runnin' Away - Larry?
    12. Thank You for Talkin' to Me Africa - Larry

Of course, I could be wrong.

Yeah Sly's bass parts all have that telltale hard pick attack/aggressive DI sound. Larry sounds like Larry.
