You should see it, Kevintomb. The first reboot is actually very enjoyable. At times a bit goofy (I'll still don't understand Scotty's alien pal), but overall it's a good fun film, reminiscent of old Lucas. It's on Netflix for free these days. I was very pleasantly surprised. "Into Darkness" was more blah for me.

I actually watched two episodes of the original Star Trek series on Netflix this weekend and I was surprised at how good the effects and look of the show were. I think in my mind (decades laters) I had imagined the original series must look like "Robot Monster" but it's really very slick for the time. The shots of the enterprise look great!!! Maybe after all the CGI we're used to, good old models just have a gravitas that is pleasing to the eye. And that Shatner was one handsome guy, back then. You forget...

I just rewatched NuTrek 2009 over the weekend. I believe it's my second time seeing it in its entirety. My feeling is the same as yours - I enjoyed it more on this viewing, and think it's a much better movie overall than NuTrek Into Darkness. It's got its eye-rolling moments to be sure, but taken on its own without any excess baggage, it's a worthwhile 2 hours.

If you're watching the HD versions of TOS via Netflix, then you're viewing the recently-revamped versions with the augmented SFX. They're not the same SFX we grew up watching back in the day - or prior to the last couple years for that matter. That might explain why you were surprised.

ooh I Have seen the first reboot, actually 3 times. I liked it in some ways but it just didnt "feel" like Star trek to me. Like ive said before, it it was not based on something existing, id give it a lot more leeway.

The 2nd one im not sure.....busy here..a lot going on...personal stuff.

Oddly enough...just saw Barbarella for the first time....hah loved it in a silly way!

Kinda reminded me of Zardoz, and Austin powers mixed up....with a hot woman!

For those of you who don't like the new film, you have a ally in Pastor Kevin Swanson. He doesn't like Star Trek Into Darkness because it promotes bestiality.

I spotted that alien choochie. A pair of creatures Kick apparently knocked off make a brief appearance.

He's referring to Kirk's encounter with the two "cat girls." Look fo Swanson's comments or the audio online. It is just so messed up, mixing in evolution and homosexuality as well. His synapses obviously do not fire in the same sequence as mine.

I suppose he'd also classify the Spock/Uhura relationship the same way.

That's true: bear in mind that Star Trek was a show where generally, every single prop, set, and costume had to be completely created from scratch -- nothing could be rented from a costume or prop house. You can see later on they started doing more and more shows set on "Earth-like planets" that had 1930s streets and costumes, cars, and so on.

As was discussed somewhere on this forum iirc, it does seem they did have some information of its demographics and that it may be among the first examples of demographic data being used to influence its renewal. However, the data may have been relatively limited and/or some execs didn't fully appreciate the value or value potential they may have revealed. It does seem the ratings were pretty darn good on the whole (especially when we think of how the widely show would have been viewed as "too weird" at the time), but it cost a load. So the ratings vs cost ratio was not all they wanted, however realistic the expectations were (or weren't).

Funny how TOS has been slagged so much for being low budget when it was one of the highest budget series ever at the time and ended up cancelled in no small part for being perceived as costing too much.

Nowadays it seems Abrams is apt to cash a bigger check himself than it took to make an entire season of TOS.

Um, the versions on Netflix are remastered and use CGI instead of the original models.

Other than being a little cleaner, the CGI effects are pretty close in spirit to the original. In my opinion.

For all of the talk about how these J.J. Abrams films are sacrilege to the spirit of Star Trek, the new film reminded me enough of what I used to like about Star Trek as a kid who watched it in syndication in the 70s that it prompted me to buy the DVD of Season One, which I am currently watching and enjoying.

Both are true: Star Trek and Mission:Impossible -- both Desilu shows! -- were among the most expensive 1-hour dramas of the 1960s. I think for the former, it's because of all the visual effects, the complicated sets, the handmade costumes and props, and the stunts. In the case of the latter, it's because they had fairly large casts, very big sets (gambling casinos, large offices, crowds on city streets), complicated storylines, and lots and lots of short scenes. When they cut Star Trek's budget in the final season, a lot of that was taken out of the actors' budgets -- guest stars now got paid less (or there were fewer of them) -- they had to use fewer sets (or more existing sets), and had to recycle effects shots as much as possible. None of these things helped the show.

It's not a fair comparison to contrast the budget of a show shot from 1966-1969 and a blockbuster feature shot more than forty years later. It's a totally different world.

And it may not necessarily be true in terms of numbers. I believe each episode of Star Trek cost about $250,000, so a 26-episode season cost about $6,500,000. I suspect J.J. is in the $5 million+ category for directors, but $5M today is not worth what it was in 1969. He told Howard Stern four years ago that he did not get a percentage of the profits from the first film, but I suspect he did get a percentage from the second one.

BTW, Star Trek: Into Darkness just moved past $380 million worldwide, so it's very close to breaking even (assuming a budget of $190M). My guess is that it'll have to hit $500M to get into profit, but there's an excellent chance that'll happen in the next few months.

It's interesting to compare and contrast how much each Star Trek film has made (or lost) over the last 30+ years:

I finally saw this tonight, and basically enjoyed it, but I have a total soft spot for Star Trek, so no shock there. Gotta say: I'm pretty pooped out on the whole "regeneration" thing when a character dies. I'm also tired of seeing 2D projection on a 3D screen that causes "hotspots" in a picture that is too dark to begin with, but that's not a problem with Star Trek. It's a problem with the insanity that is Regal Cinemas.

  22. I thought what might have worked better for the end is for Kirk to have already had a relationship with Carol Marcus established and then having her die in the conclusion.

Yeah, that's something not a lot of people understand or are aware of. If you can sit in the absolute dead center, the hot spots from the silver screen aren't as bad. But it also has color temperature irregularities, so chances are, the color you see is not quite what they intended.

There are some new higher-output screens that came out six months ago that "allegedly" solve these problems. Unfortunately, theater owners are going to be really, really reluctant to install them, since they're still paying off the old ones. My hope is that eventually, laser projectors will allow 3D pictures of normal brightness for regular screens, but I dunno how far away those are going to be.

I only saw Star Trek: Into Darkness in 2D, but it looked fine to me. No real issues, and I was relieved that they cut the "Abrams Lens Flares" down by more than half, to the point where I barely noticed them. Decent color, for the most part.

    Next movie!
