There is a more expensive way to steal music - copying LPs on 30ips reel-to-reel tapes for your friends!

My high school music teacher used to copy his LPs to reel to reel right away after purchasing, then the LP went on the shelf.

I had a guitar teacher who did that except it was cassettes not reel to reel. He was very proud of it too from what I remember. All these records have only been played once!

My Dad duped a lot of his LP's on cassettes. I guess that he was trying to preserve the records, because he didn't have a tape deck in the car until years later.

I duped to cassettes and then to CDRs.

Sure, I used to dupe to cassettes in the day. Later I went to DAT, then CDR, now straight to the computer. But then again most of my LPs have already been digitized by now.

Why not just get yourself invited to a swanky party at some radio exec's house, then just steal any gold or platinum record awards off the wall...?

    Interesting, but ultimately kinda useless.

The weak part is the final step, the resin. If he found a slower curing one, he could vacuum the bubbles out.

I used to record off the radio, then saved the audio to my 386 comp. and I also dubbed tapes using two Magnavox boomboxes in front of each other, one playback, one recording, since I didn’t own a double cassette boom box with high speed dubbing until the early 90’s

...and then uploaded digitized copies to archive.org.

Oh yea, I just rented maybe 30 Christmas discs from the library and I’m gonna make Christmas mix tapes using an old skool Sony boombox from 1989. I’m so excited, and looking forward to this weekend!

Of course. Sure it's more trouble than it's worth (and sounds like crap) but it's freeeeeee, maaaan. Free!

Plus all the hipster techies gotta save money somehow for all the pricey gizmos they buy when a new and improved version comes out every year.

Oh, he was just having fun with chemicals, and this was one in a series. And he's not alone on YouTube.

But in the intro, when he "scratches" like a DJ, etc... I hate seeing records abused for fun, and I had a visceral reaction.

This guy is great. Experimenting with chemicals and having fun. He is obviously educated in science, and is most definitely not a hipster!

I came across a stash of Japanese Pink Floyd pressings once in an antique store that had all been played only once. Previous owner was an Armed Forces Radio DJ who immediately dubbed everything to reel to reel. I could never figure out why reel to reel would be easier for a DJ to use, but hey those are some pretty fine records I got.
