    Steve-- A Ritchie Valens question....

    ...since I got the newsletter (Thanks)!!

    I remember reading that Bob Keane at one point was able to dig up the studio master for "La Bamba", and that the label was going to issue a stereo version of that track. As far as I know, that release never materialized.

    To your knowledge, does this stereo tape exist? Would you use it "as is" if it did, or just remix a cleaner mono version with it?

    Just curious,

    It's not a stereo tape, just a digital sync up with the mono backing track and the master take. Has that typical sync up phasing sound throughout the song. Sorry!

    But I **was** curious about that report, particularly since the release never happened, so thanks for clearing it up!

    The stereo sync-up version of "La Bamba" was released on a Del-Fi CD called "Rockin' All Night - The Very Best Of Ritchie Valens" in 1995. The catalog number is DFCD 9001. It should still be in print. I believe it was also released on the Ritchie Valens three CD set that came out on Del-Fi about five years ago. As sync-ups go, it's not as awful as some I've heard,but the mono mix is still the definitive one.
