Complete lack of new ideas but an excess of "wokeness."

I’d be upset if anyone besides Harrison Ford ever played Indiana Jones, man or woman. If they made it clear that this new female character was a different person from the original Indiana Jones, then that would be fine I guess. I think the ideal scenario would be Spielberg doing an all-new franchise featuring a female adventurer, that way there’s no forced attempt to capitalize on the Indiana Jones brand name, and also won’t upset any fans. To me, Harrison Ford is Indiana Jones, and it wouldn’t feel right replacing him. After all, this is Indiana Jones we’re talking about, not James Bond.

Considering the pile of crap that the last installment was I think a female lead would be a good way to reboot the story...I could see it working as long as they didn't pick someone overly sexual while wearing as little as possible while in the jungle to avoid turning it into Tomb Raider....maybe Emily Blunt?

This thread isn't really about appropriate roles for women, or changing sex of iconic characters...it's about the lack of originality in America's Stockpile Of Dreams. People aren't balking because a wonan isn't appropriate for Indiana Jones; it's because a woman is inappropriate for "Indiana Jones".

You spend 20 years selling us a character, and suddenly you choose to upset the tea cart...because the industry isn't ready for...supporting any new characters, because they always think in old characters.

"Think of it like, a female 'Indiana Jones'."
"Wait, we can do one better...howabout making Indiana Jones a female?!"
"Wait, that wasn't what I was talki-"
"Yeah, that's the ticket! EVerybody loves Indiana Jones; everybody loves babes...so, let's just cut a deal for the name, and make Indana Jones a babe!"
"No, that wasn't what I was goin-"
"I can see it now! Up on the marquee: 'Indiana Jones is back - and, wait'll you see her front!' Whoo-hoo!"
"But now you're making it all about the-"
"'Scarlett Johansson...IS...Indiana Jones!' Or if we can't get her, howabout that Lorrie Craft babe..."
    "*sigh* You mean, 'Lara Croft'?"
    "Right - her too...."

The American Fim Industry isn't interested in making icons, when they can just take those they already know will make money, smash 'em together, and come out with more money. Why the bleep is it, they have the ballz to haul out a bad copy of an old TV show franchise every first weekend of the Spring releases (from a property their target audiences would have no reason to relate to in the first place, usually because it's closer to Boomer-Era Cheese), market it it like it was the biggest thing on the planet, the commemorative cup from Taco Bell is the only thing that makes money on it...and then down it goes before the 2nd weekend...and they do it all again the very next year! Yet they don't have the ballz to risk a little green on an unknown project with the best creators on the planet behind it...unless they can describe it to C.B in the Head Office, as something like, "It's Star Wars meets Glee, Boss - can't miss!"

I guess he got the memo.

Curious to recently watch Pacific Rim 2 where a young female character slaps and punches a male character as they train near the beginning of the film. I'm curious how many films aimed at a young audience would show a young man slapping and punching a woman? I had a curious flashback to The Last Jedi.

These days it all about the 'francbise'. I think a different creative mindset exists when you remove franchising from the picture. I wonder whether Spielberg was even thinking about sequels when he made the original! A female Indiana Jones sounds like an embarrassingly awful creative decision, really weak!

We already have a female Indiana Jones, she's in the Tomb Raider movies.

Didn't Marvel turn Thor into a female character (Jane Foster)?

Sorry, but that's just wrong in my book.

  15. Oh Gawd. This will spark a porno titled "In Diana Jones."

I do not understand this desire to swap gender roles for very well established characters. Where is the need? What is the point?
Indiana Jones is a Man. There is no need for a female version of Indiana Jones.
Make a totally separate female character, in a totally separate movie, if the desire is to make a female artifact hunter.

Having a male character, with strong male characteristics, should not be wrong.
Embrace the differences between men and women and understand we are NOT equal...and for good reasons...and this is okay.

He should consider a new Saving Private Ryan with an all female cast. Maybe call it Saving Private Rihanna. Or a new HBO series Band of Sisters. Whatever it is, start with a concept and build a movie around that. They can shoehorn a story in later.

Ya know guys...even if he does this it doesn't negate the previous entries into the series. You can still go to your deathbed clutching your precious male Indiana Jones DVD/Blu Rays if this happens...the original series doesn't go out of print the second a new movie comes out with a female lead.

That's pretty much the stock answer that suggests these things aren't worth talking about. Of course the original movies wouldn't go anywhere - and after the last Indiana movie I'm not sure the world needs another one either way. But what you're saying here essentially tries to quieten one side of the argument. It's okay for people to feel strongly about this stuff.

It's worth remembering, they wouldn't want to do this at all if it were not for the original films, they're not discrete and separate.

Why can't they just focus on making a good movie instead of trying to write all these social justice things into it?

  24. Seriously Grant? You actually wonder?

Indiana Jones was written as a male character. The character was played by a male and has established itself as an iconic role over the last 37 years.
EVERYTHING revolving around Indiana Jones is male centric and there should be NOTHING wrong with that.

Next is the complete lack of any imagination when the gender swap is taken into account for a situation like this. The movie makers and script writes are so void of original thought when they come up with stuff like this that it SHOULD tick people off.

Last is the why. Why do this? What is the point?
