Oh, I dunno about that... In the pre-digital days, they had limited post-production flexibility, so everything had to be close to perfect sound-wise and performance-wise while the tape was rolling, so a lot of care had to be used during tracking. From reading the features in TapeOp, today's engineers are still very much craftsmen and -women, but today's needs are different and modern studio set-ups reflect that. There are positives and negatives to both approaches.

As for the groovy looking grilles near the ceiling - they're for A/C. Playback was via an RCA LC-1A in the corner of the live room next to the control room window:

The RCA LC-1 is part of an article in the current Stereophile magazine "Five vintage loudspeakers you should hear before you die"

    Cool....... I'll check that out.

  6. I apologize if my tone came across in a manner which would offend. I really meant no harm.

I agree with you that there are both positives and negatives to both approaches. I know there are many fine hardworking folks out there doing things right in both the digital and analog realm.

I have seen some recording "studios" in my time that constitue nothing but a computer and two monitors. Not to say that great results cannot be had from this setup, it just makes me look back with admiration on some of the older pictures in the thread and appreciate the hard work of those folks.

    Hope that makes sense!
