My girlfriend's favorite band. Not my cup of tea.

No, not their best album. Nothing comes close to the Crystal Ball-Grand Illusion-Pieces of 8 era in my opinion.
But its a damn fine album.

Crystal Ball is the best... the highpoint.

I wan't much of a Styx fan for the 70s or 80s. I would always think of Babe when I thought of Styx. Recently I've changed my mind. I really think The Grand Illusion is a mis-maligned masterpiece. But I'd still rather forget Babe, and I have yet to hear The Mission.

Always felt like early Styx and early Journey had something in common, then a long came Tommy Shaw and Steve Perry.

I'd have to disagree about Tommy Shaw. I think Dennis DeYoung's inner-Broadway Musical persona came to the fore and that's when their music started to falter.

Not really saying either was a bad thing, but some of the early sounds of each band were eventually lost and forgotten. Those early Journey albums and Styx II have such a great vibe. Saw both bands numerous times late 70's/early 80's.

I don't think he was saying their music got bad when those respective members joined, but rather that's when things changed for each band.

For me, Paradise Theatre is their overall best album. I love Equinox, as well. So powerful. They all have great stuff, even Kilroy Was Here.

Actually, while I love those albums, I like Equinox and Paradise Theater even more.

Nah, early Styx is a good listen, but so is Shaw's stuff. Early Journey is boring fusion and they'd have been completely forgotten if it weren't for Perry.

Cornerstone never gets much praise. If you were cruising around in your Camaro in fall of 1979 with your girlfriend that's what you were listening to.

Not going to dispute that. There are some lost gems on those albums though that are worth a listen. Journey's Infinity and Evolution albums are so great.

I prefer Kilroy, Illusion, PO8, Cornerstone, PT, Equinox, Styx II and Crystal Ball, but I think all those are great records as opposed to good.

I love Styx II and Kilroy.

Musically Kilroy is not masterpiece, but A for effort, imo.

Just listened to Cornerstone in earnest for maybe the 2nd time ever the other day. I enjoyed the hell out of it. That is an excellent record.

That is insanity to say The Mission is their best album. Who wrote that? Tommy Shaw?

But "the Mission" is a damn fine album for a band that had its peak 40 years ago!
