Supertramp Crime of The Century Sound Quality Question- Help! 2002 vs. 2014 Editions*

I might have the good '90 Canadian pressing. If I do, I'd be OK with selling it to you, if you're interested. I'll confirm the DR rating when I get home. I also have the Very Best of Supertramp 2.

The vinyl is just so much better, but that's just my opinion.

 

I think buying a compilation instead of the original album would indeed be the Crime of the Century.

 

I might be interested. If you can let me know the DR numbers and the condition of the CD that would be great. Although the US pressing that's out now could be very close or even the same as the 1990 version?

 

They most likely are interchangeable although the DR rating on the same compilation of the same year seems to differ from the Canadian to the European pressing, highly favoring the Canadian version.

 

Yes and I wonder what the DR numbers are on the US version? Unfortunately no DR numbers for the US edition are on the DR database.

Amazon has it for $5.00 but it has a release date of 2001 and is listed as remastered. It's one of those add on items on Amazon that can only be bought if you spend $25.00 or more.

On the UDRD website, there are two entries for European pressings ; a German one which is good and a European one which is bad. Yours appears to be the good one.

 

Those are great numbers. I just did some comparing on Spotify with tracks from COTC. I compared the Very Best of to the 2014 COTC remaster and even with a lossy format the Very Best of was louder and a bit brighter then the 2014 COTC. Still this Very Best of has so many releases it's insane!!

 

That's nothing. You should see some of the more well known compilations. Instead of the 59 releases of the Supertramp, you're then in the triple digits!

 

There are listings for this comp on Amazon Canada with a date of 1990, so dealing with a 3rd party seller, selling a used copy should yield the pre-remaster version.

 

I'm not sure about the DR values posted for the early release on the UDRD database, I've seen inaccurate reports before.
IMHO, the "louder" values refer to the remastered edition that was released about 10 years later.

That JVC Super Vinyl that they used was truly special. I wonder why they discontinued production of it...probably toxic or something!

Yup, I know. Still, imho, that might be a mistake on the UDRD database regarding this title.

 

I just bought a sealed copy US edition of The Very Best of from 1990. $6.00 with shipping-can't be beat.

Exactly. Its formulation and the manufacturing process weren't exactly eco-friendly and the whole process was deemed as malignant for the workers' health.
