I love Baxter's for the bold steps it took into cerebral psychedelia, but my preference goes to Pillow for its fresh harmonies, folk roots, and overall good vibes.

I'd have to go with Baxter's on this one, though I love both.

No White Rabbit because it was already released as a single?

Baxter's... ever since the day it was released.

So, in 1967, most US record labels stopped chopping up UK albums, but the UK started chopping up American ones?!? I wonder how many people bought this and thought the woman singing on three of these songs was Grace Slick? Signe Toly is not mentioned among the members on the back (which is the same back cover as the US version), but she sings lead on "Chauffeur Blues" and backing on "Come Up the Years" and "Don't Slip Away" (all taken from the debut Takes Off!). Hers and Grace's vocal styles are similar enough that a lot of people might have had no idea.

I don't think having the option to choose both LP's tells us anything in a poll.

  10. Yeah I actually not a fan of any of the vs threads. Love the Airplane and on any particular day both can be amazing. Basically as most of savant of these questions and our answers may vary depending on mood. Now the mono Baxters is pretty cool.

I like them both, but went with Surrealistic Pillow, which has more of an innocence to me.

I agree but at least this poll isn't Baxter's vs. Switched on Bach. :nyah:

    Baxter's by a wide margin.

That has songs from "Jefferson Airplane Takes Off", replacing part of the "Pillow" album. How weird.

All that silly drug stuff between songs ruined Baxter for me. It made it hard to listen through on vinyl back in the day, despite the great songs.

So, to compare Baxter to one of the greatest albums in history, Surrealistic Pillow......Surrealistic Pillow wins easily.

I love both, but Baxter's is my favorite JA album, and easily one of my top desert island discs.

Do you mean Small Package of Value? That's one bit only after Pooneil. I don't understand.

Baxter's by a country mile. I think it's the best studio record ever made by anyone in the whole SF scene (noodging out Anthem of the Sun and Happy Trails on the technicality that those two are mostly live).

I'm referring to tracks 2,7 and 9 (A small package of value will come to you, shortly, Rejoyce, and Spare Chanynge) which, in my opinion, are not really songs. They are just silly banter and fooling around.

I hated having to sit through them on vinyl and finally just stopped listening to the album altogether back in high school in the late 1960's.

But, the other tracks on the album are really great.

  24. Thought they were cool interludes. Transition pieces.

I love Rejoyce. It's definitely a song and not fooling around. Spare Change is a meandering jam that does nothing for me though.
