I have a Teac X-3R. When I opened the unit, the capstan belt had melted to tar.
I removed and cleaned up the flywheel and replaced the belt.

Then unit would only fast forward with tape threaded properly. Also noticed
that capstan head was not turning.

But unit would fast forward, rewind and play when tape was run direct from reel
to reel. My deduction were that there was enough power from reel motors to make
this happen and that capstan motor was faulty.

I replaced capstan motor. No change in performance. Capstan motor head, capstan
belt and flywheel still don't turn on their own. They move freely when spun
    manually, so there's no restriction.

Bottom line is: I want a unit operating just long enough to transfer contents
of about 2 dozen 7-inch reels onto CD and don't want to spend a small fortune.

    Hi,

The Capstan motor and the motor switches are a known service weakness on this model and the X-300. These machines were originally designed for Radio Shack and Teac later sold them due to their popularity. Sounds like you need motor switches. I also advise getting a service manual for your deck. Teac parts should still have one.
