Never thought I'd see the day a direct drive table would win any award from them.

Did they ever review the VPI direct drive?

Direct drive in and of itself was never really a problem just like any technology implemented well.

I guess Technics paid their bill this year???

Googling this turntable shows a lot written about but not anyone who sells it.

I wonder how good the 1200 is, compared to .....

I am not sure why audiophiles still gravitate to belt drive, when the likes of Rega still can't seem to accurately track to 33 RPM.

    Long live Technics.

I once compared with a friend a Thorens TD150 (beltdrive) to a TD124 (idler wheel). I don't know the right english word. But the difference was huge.
The man is a pro reviewer. He mostly uses a TD124 or a Garrard. Why should het do that?
According to him you have to spend more then 20.000 for a belt drive to beat the TD124. Rumble? None.

I'm not sure why comparing a belt drive and an idler drive have anything to do with the Technics.

20.000$? I dont think so. A new Planar 3 with the Neo PSU should be stable enough in speed to not really be noticeable by ear, at least for most. Were talking 0.30% wow and flutter MAXIMUM.

I would purchase this in a heartbeat if I could afford it. The 1200 gr is cheaper and maybe on my radar.

It deserves the award. The GR is fantastic, and the G even better in the right places.

Wasn't the VPI a rim-drive (in other words, an idler, not a direct-drive)?

No, it was direct drive. Harry Weisfeld is a fan of vintage high end direct drive designs like the Kenwood L-O7D and Micro Seiki DDX-1000 and others (as I'd guess most audiophiles are), and I think wanted to make something similar.

Anybody own one? Or know someone who does? Has anyone ever actually seen one in person?

Dis Technics manage to sneak MQA processing into the SL1200G or is it due to a lapse of policy enforcement at TAS?

I agree with the decision. The GR is essentially a hand made, technologically updated version of a rock solid legend of a turntable. This is the table many new and resurgent vinyl lovers have waiting for. The fact that Technics listened to the voice of the customer and pulled the trigger for production is a significant event.

You shouldn't always take manufacture specs at face value.

Sure, but anything outside the value is accepted as a defective product and returnable.
