Something's gotta be bumped for "Point Blank." Lee Marvin is more like a Robo-cop than any kind of P.I., the cinematography makes the whole enterprise look like sci-fi a-la "Blade Runner", another great noir that might belong on the list. "Out of the Past"? No question. Quintessence of noir.

Out Of The Past is the very pinnacle of noir, everything else comes in slightly below it (at least in my humble opinion).

The Big Sleep is not a good movie. The plot makes no sense.

I completely disagree. It is true, it is so convoluted that at least 1 murder is never explained and for most films that would be the nail in the coffin. However, in regards to this particular movie it doesn't matter. It's a SUPREME entertainment, one of the greatest of all-time and almost every scene could make a highlight reel. The lack of cohesion in the plot is secondary to all the wonderful performances and set-pieces.

I haven't read the thread or looked at the list. I hate lists. To me, true Noir is from the 1943 to 1953 period. But I can name my top 10 right here and now:

    OUT OF THE PAST
    DOUBLE INDEMNITY
    KISS ME DEADLY
    THE KILLERS
    THE THIRD MAN
    NIGHTMARE ALLEY
    DETOUR
    THE ASPHALT JUNGLE
    NIGHT AND THE CITY
and, oh, yes, it is Noir:
    SUNSET BLVD.

Don't forget the goodies from RKO Radio Pictures like MACAO, the creepy William Talman in THE HITCHIKER or the wonderful Fox films like KISS OF DEATH ("down the stairs you go, crippled bitch!"). Amazing.

RKO had so many Noir goodies, they loved the style. One of the main reasons is the sets could be cheaper, everything could be cheaper and look better just by lowering the lights and playing entire scenes in shadow. Perfect for the low-budget studio. Even their horror films had that look.

In fact, when I think of Film Noir, I automatically think of RKO films of that era.

That Fridaynightboy list shouldn't have included Chinatown or Blood Simple. Both are great (just watched Chinatown again the other night) but they are neo-noir.
