NME's list of The 20 Best Songs About Rain has some classics, and some songs I've never heard before (the newer songs): http://www.nme.com/list/20-songs-rain-1947915 What, no "Rhythm Of The Rain" by The Cascades? BOO!
Barbra Streisand Don't Rain On My Parade They Might Be Giants Pencil Rain Peter Gabriel Red Rain Jacques Brel Madeline The Marmalade I See The Rain
The fact that this doesn't include Ann Peebles sublime I Can't Stand The Rain made me sigh at how low the NME has fallen since its great days...
Strike One. A “List of Rain Songs” needs this. A Must. Based upon the writer’s pithy comments, especially the one about Buddy Holly’s “Raining In My Heart”, he/she wasn’t intending/assigned to write anything more than a “hit and run” list, probably to catch quick clicks alongside the ads.
Rainy Night in Georgia Think that would be a given.. Oh well And my pick of Rainin In My Heart was Slim Harpo
I clicked on the link and saw "Rihanna". that was enough for me. Rain is, for whatever reason, a tremendously popular theme in songs. Nearly always it seems to be a metaphor for unhappiness, but not always. The Lovin' Spoonful - "Rain On the Roof" (a good excuse for a bit o' nookie) or this one - expressing regret, but in this case regret that the rain has finished. There are many places where rain is welcomed, since it's kind of a requirement if you want to grow anything in the soil.
Raining in My Heart is there. I'd have chosen CCR's "Who'll Stop The Rain" over "Have You Ever Seen The Rain".
A list that starts with Rihanna, you say? Milli Vanilli's "Blame It on the Rain" (or whoever sang it)?
There are a wealth of great "rain songs" so I can't argue with any individual's list. But Led Zeppelin's The Rain Song is the first one I can't imagine being without. Heck, its very title says it all.
