  2. The effect is called STEED (send tape echo-echo delay) and it is indeed complicated. I just read up on it here:

I don't think the Barrett/Scott mixes I mentioned have ANY level changes at all - the levels and pan positions seem to be set and then left alone while the tape plays from beginning to end. Just a simple transfer of the session tape - that's one of the things I like about them, the lack of post-production polish puts you 'there' in the studio.

I've been really enjoying them, and the lack of added reverb makes a nice change (and no reverb at all is preferable to the reverb sound on Anthology, YSS, Naked, though I concede that the objectives are different). Unless the Beatles ever do a 'Cutting Edge' style sessions box, this is probably all we'll ever get of this type of mix, unfortunately.

To me the echo stuff in 'Paperback Writer' sounds like massive tape delay instead of an actual studio reverb chamber.

In fairness, the echo on the original stereo mix of "Paperback Writer" isn't identical to the echo on the original mono mix (the mixes having been prepared some months apart), so there isn't one canon "right" way to do it. It sounds odd on 1, but only because it's unfamiliar.

That's actually a sort of logical refutation of the "stereo mixes are less valid because they were done later" argument.

Then there is Let It Be Naked. And if we add stuff that hasn't seen cd release the list is much longer. AHDN dvd. HELP dvd. MMT dvd. ANTHOLOGY dvd. ROCK BAND.

The MMT remixed film has a great all-stereo -mix of Walrus on it.

I've heard, and I should check it out. I've heard that even that version has other background music/sounds seguing over the beginning/end, though...?

I only now picked up the 1+ set (2 DVD's, 1 CD, and book). I plan on opening it and enjoying it tonight. It has long been on my list but for some reason I kept putting it off. I recently discovered that the set is getting harder and harder to find at "normal prices". Not that it was especially cheap even upon release. But I notice fewer and fewer bookstores / Best Buys / entertainment stores even have one in stock anymore. I do still see a handful on eBay and Amazon but they don't appear plentiful.

I probably paid a little too much buying it at Barnes and Noble, but at least I now have a copy and I could see it with my own two eyes and hold it.

I noticed that this set was indeed marketed as a "limited edition", yet usually those words carry little weight (as was the case with the supposedly limited 2009 Mono Box, although I have immensely enjoyed it from day one). Yet this 1+ set does appear to be vanishing from regular outlets.

I have this film on Blu-Ray from a few years ago -- is the audio all remixed?

It's good but I prefer the one from Love with the orchestra spread out on both sides...

And I like the one on the Anthology DVD, with the rhythm track more prominent... so many options, and most of them incomplete at the beginning and/or end!

I also like the MMT DVD mix, but to me the Shakespeare clips are mixed in too quietly... so I crossfaded the end of it with the original mono mix. Heresy!

Been listening to this and comparing to the original tracks. I think most of the Remixes are really good, nice to have the vocals spread out but not panned hard right like on the original Day Tripper. My only complaint is that the backing vocals and the big banging drum on the final refrains of "Yellow Submarine" are mixed too low.

During the fadeout, there's a wind sound effect that gradually fades up as the song fades out. It's not any more distracting than the radio static on the original mix. Unlike the versions on Love and RockBand, the new MMT mix ends at the same time as the original record instead of fading out or cutting off early.

I know this might be sort of a dumb question, but can you play it as a complete song audio-only track, or are some other film sounds mixed in with it so one has to hear those? And is the video inevitable? I suppose if there are no other film noises, one could simply turn off the display.
