The Beatles can be a learning experience.

How many people knew of the existence of pataphysical science prior to hearing Maxwell's Silver Hammer?
Or a dovetail joint from Glass Onion? Well, I guess people can make up their own meaning for that one... But what about the Cast Iron Shore?

I just had an idea: Past Masters, Volume One and Past Masters, Volume Two could have been called The Essential Beatles, Volume One and The Essential Beatles, Volume Two. They could have used the cover art from the Australian LP. with volume one having the black background and white writing of the Australian LP front cover and with volume two having a white background and black writing. The back cover of The Essential Beatles is a chronology of the band's recording career and could have been reworked to suit the new compilations.

Has anyone made a list of the past masters songs combined with all the essential singles that happened to be album tracks?

Make at least three of them and treat them like actual albums, break them down in smaller chunks, curate the tracks a bit and give them a solid home of their own to live in. AND give us album art that’s more than a logo/title face. Pictures or illustrations but something that adds some visual flair and distinction to each release. Names could be song titles or combinations like they’ve done with their other releases.

The Beatles complete UK A & B sides along with the Long Tall Sally EP, Bad Boy and the original Across the Universe all fit on a double CD. This with great packaging would be a sublime compilation. All original mono 45 mixes up to Ballad of John & Yoko of course. This would tidy everything up in a well presented, appealing and marketable way. It would sell a lot if well promoted.

They could also reissue all the original 45s in an expensive box set to coincide with it. There would be plenty of takers. A quality hardback book with full size photos of worldwide picture sleeves could be included.

I've never liked the Past Masters compilations. They are practical but that's all. They don't sound all that great, with weaker stereo mixes often used. They also don't flow particularly well as albums. The artwork, if you can call it that, is as dull as possible. There are so many great photos of The Beatles, yet the artwork on their more recent releases has been at times abysmal.

The more I've seen from this thread I have concluded the name is as good as any. I do believe the cover art could have been much better.

What I will honestly always believe is that the songs should have been added to the appropriate albums as bonus tracks. Along with a few Anthology tracks they could have created some great deluxe editions. Of course value for the customer is not an Apple thing. I did this for myself and this is what I ripped to my computer.
