The "refurnished" outtakes on the Exile re-issue got me looking at old Stones studio boots. I'm thinking of putting together an 80 minute (1 cd-r) compilation of Stones studio outtakes from all eras. The only criteria is that it has to consist of unreleased songs (or very different versions of released songs) recorded in a studio. Any suggestions?

My fave Rolling Stones studio outtake is their version of 'Drift Away', the Dobie Gray song. It's from the It's Only Rock 'n' Roll sessions, I believe, and there's a version going around that's sped up a little and sounds great. I think Rod Stewart picked up on the track when Mick and the boys passed it over, and recorded it for his Atlantic Crossing album.

There are dozens. Here are a few favorites:

I Can See It (Get Yourself Together) (66)
    Still a Fool (68)
    Hillside Blues (68-9)
    Highway Child (68-9)
    Travelin' Man (70)
    Potted Shrimp 70 ish)
    Criss Cross Mind (72)
Living In the Heart of Love (74)
    Claudine
    We Had It All
    Yellow Cab
    I Need You
    Fiji Jim
    Misty Roads (all 78)
    For Your Precious Love (89)
    Honest Man (94)
    Zip Mouth Angel (94)

With both Dirty Work and ER, the stuff left off was better than the albums.

I have studio outtakes of "Gimme Shelter" sung by Keith and "You Got The Silver" sung by Mick.

I think my holy grail is a remix of "Have You Seen Your Mother Baby" in good stereo.

I have a best of boots i made for myself...
3 discs, my criteria is very high, as far as song quality and recording quality...
i'm still have some room for a few of the voodoo era stuff to fill up disc 3....
alll songs i use are dif. mixes or alt. version or just enreleased tracks... a lot of the some girls through steel wheels stuff doesn't make the grade b/c of loud tape hiss.... not audiophile quality, but my hope is to have it sound as close as I would want an official release of these tracks to sound.

I think most of the Stones outtakes I've heard are excellent, and deserve an official release someday.

One that hasn't been mentioned yet is their version of "Down in the Bottom", recorded at Chess Studios.

Not quite an outtake per se, but I do enjoy "Exile on Main Street Blues." I wonder if there's a nice-sounding version of that somewhere in the vaults.

Some really great stuff from their early years, a real shame that these have never been officially released:

    Bright Lights Big City
    High Heel Sneakers
    Stewed and Keefed
    Diddley Daddy
    Roadrunner
    Down In The Bottom
    How Many Times
    Cops 'n Robbers
    Roll Over Beethoven
    Memphis Tennessee
    Goodbye Girl

  18. Great song. Too bad the lyrics are so potty mouthed.

yes, look at Pdog's list. Also For Your Precious Love, which I listed, is a Steel Wheels outtake. There's a substantial load of Voodoo Lounge stuff.

Thing I love about the Stoenes outtakes is Mick sings full blown in a lot of different ways on most cuts. He never just gives a guide vocal.

Yeah, that's great fun. I'm wondering why it wasn't on the Exile Bonus disk just released...

I like the outtake's and alternative versions from the beggars Banquet and Let it Bleed sessions. I can never have too many versions for Memo From Turner. The sound quality is so good I almost think someone from the Stones camp has been behind these releases. I especially like a studio jam with Nicky Hopkins called And I was A Country Boy.
