I always thought it was one of the more insanely funny parts of the film.
He spends most of the film wondering where it is ………. but what kind of person would want it back after what happened to it!

 

The rug that he wants back isn't the one that got micturated upon. It's assumed he got rid of that one before he visits the mansion.

Unless you mean the one that was stolen. But then, why wouldn't he wonder what happened to it?

As a student at UC Santa Cruz I had those exact same striped shorts. To this day I've never seen those particular shorts anywhere else.

 

To me, it's a most referenced part in the film, being quoted by how things tie a room together.

 

I've always loved the two thugs who open the movie, dunking The Dude in his toilet bowl. When they realise they've got the wrong guy, they storm out - one irritatingly complaining: "Thanks a lot, ###hole!"

Awful, stupid film. Had to watch it a second time, however long ago that ordeal was, just to be sure it was as dreadful as I first thought. It was worse. Makes The Fockers look like Ingmar Bergman!
