My number one! So pleased to see it mentioned early in an SHF thread.

Moving on with, but certainly not down, the list: Mould, Hart, Norton.

I'm not the biggest Who fan, but the way they all played their instruments really took up a lot of musical space, even before you talk about how loud they were.

The doors I wouldn't say that about at all, in live recordings I've heard, the absence of bass makes them sound less full.

Massive sound from U2? I do not hear that at all. Maybe you meant to type RUSH and hit the wrong letters. :wiggle:

if you are in a “power trio” you had better be a damn fine musician with the chops to fill in a lot of space.

Jazz guys could do it and so could exceptional rock musicians (Who, Cream, Gov’t Mule).

Totally. Loudest show I saw in a mid sized arena was these dudes. They hurt my fillings they were so loud. But, again, we're not talking about just sheer volume. One of the cool things Lemmy would do is play his bass like a guitar (full chording) to flesh out their sound. That helped a lot with being a three piece band though it did make Motörhead lack some bottom end.

Does it count as a three man band if there's also a singer? By that standard, I'll count Rush and ZZ Top but the ultimate winner has to be The Police. They created an amazingly rich sound, just the three of them.

Not be argumentative but if it’s guitar, bass, and drums that’s a trio. The OP asked for three man instrumental band.

Yeah, but those are three man bands instrumentally for the most part. When I say instrumentally that’s guitar, bass, and drums with either a singer or in the case of a trio, someone is singing. Am I the one that is confused here? It’s very possible ...
