    "Help Me Rhonda" and "Good Vibrations" are the obvious influences.

    Edit: I'd also argue that "Heroes and Villians" is there. As well as the beginning of "California Girls" and the melody to "Let Him Run Wild," although the latter may be stretching it.

    Love this. so many songs to check out. Here are a couple of additions:

    My Love Explodes - Monkees/Last Train to Clarksville (Bass Guitar Part)
    Albert Brown - Beatles/All Together Now (rising group vocals at the end)

    ok one more - honestly, for Mole from the Ministry (1985): Julian Lennon/Valotte (1984) - listen to the vocal tremolo, the overall pace of the song, the use of piano.

    I'm glad 1977ub contributed to this thread today, since I was unaware of it! I'm a huge XTC/Dukes fan, and look forward to perusing this thread!

    My love of the Dukes releases was largely responsible for me getting the Rhino box sets "Nuggets" and "Where The Action Is! - Los Angeles Nuggets" which are indispensable parts of my CD collection!

    On "Braniac's Daughter" I'd add that the lyric "One bag, two bag, three bags full, sir" was taken from "Yes, Sir, No, Sir" by the Kinks.

    Wonderful forum dudes!
    I only wanted add some of songs that maybe influenced the Dukes...

    Rush Hour by BLUES MAGOOS and Made Of Sugar Maid Of Spice by MOUSE & THE TRAPS for My Love Explodes...
    Scream Thy Last Scream by PINK FLOYD for Bike Ride To The Moon (the gnome voice);
    Look At Me I'm You by BLOSSOM TOES for What In The World (bassline...);
    Real Life Permanent Dream by TOMORROW & Lucifer Sam by PINK FLOYD for Your Gold Dress banjo line (here with sitar and easter guitar...);
    Humanoid Boogie by The BONZO DOG BAND for Have You Seen Jakie? (psyc-organ chords, listen it...);
    Are You A Boy Or Are You A Girl by The BARBARIANS and Blues Theme by DAVE ALLEN AND THE ARROWS on Little Lighthouse;

    More psych compilations that are likely to have heard could be THE GREAT BRITISH PSYCHEDELIC TRIP VOL. 2 on LP or VOL. 3 on CD, includes Tomorrow, Idle Race, Locomotive, Keith West & Mark Writz, The Moles, Pretty Things, July and The Yardbirds...

  13. Since this thread was brought back to life; anybody up for discussing the influences for these other Duke tracks now available on the 25O'clock remaster?

    The fog horn at the beginning of 'Little Lighthouse' is obviously an homage to the intro of Steve Miller Band's 'My Friend'.

    tere's something about the echo on the vocal (and the vocal itself) for 'collideascope' that's reminding me of 'instant karma'- perhaps it's the stomping of the percussion, too.

    My Friend Jack (esque) by THE SMOKE maybe is on 25 o'Clock;
    Hole In my Shoe by TRAFFIC is on Moles From The Ministry;
    Semi-Detached Suburban Mr. James by MANFRED MANN is on What In The World (the voice melody...);
    On With The Show by The STONES on Albert Brown.

    On 25 O'Clock we can listen a guitar riff a là Child In Time by Deep Purple and a dig in the final at David Bowie Ziggy Stardust Aladdin Sane, "Time"...

    Awesome! Glad somebody found this old thread of mine! Still haven't finished this project (or my Mellotron compilation that I was working on at the same time). After finishing a project I'm working on now, I should really get on this. I want to be able to sit in my backyard listening to this compilation this summer!

    I heard what reminded me of early era Syd Barrett Pink Floyd, Electric Prunes, some Beach Boys, I
    didin't hear any Beatles. But I never thought of any particular Dukes song, as being written as a hommage
    or derived from any song in particular, I just thought there was a general feeling of Syd Barrett or Brian Wilson
    or Procul Harem. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe each Dukes song was written with a particular sixties song
    in mind. Did XTC ever say that was the case?

    The guitar solo section of "25 O'clock" (starting at about 3:15) reminds me a whole lot of the guitar solo section of Frank Zappa's "Holiday in Berlin, Full Blown" from "Burnt Weenie Sandwich. It's mainly the drums+tambourine sound and rhythm.
