Great one - I have the last (I think) cd reissue and if sounds good so I'm thinking the AAA vinyl ought to be spectacular.
Thoroughly enjoyable, two greats having a ball playing off and joking with each other. This Verve issue adds several tracks that weren't on the original CD issue (on the American Music Hall label, part of the Fantasy group). The rhythm section - Eric Gunnison (Piano, Electric Piano), Jim Hughart (Bass), and Winard Harper (Drums) is as responsive and swinging as can be, just killin'. How fun it would have been to see the shows that yielded these tracks!

Funky Friday! Roy Brooks: The Free Slave Roy Brooks - drums Woody Shaw - trumpet George Coleman - tenor saxophone Hugh Lawson - piano Cecil McBee - bass Recorded at Left Bank Jazz Society, Baltimore MD, April 26, 1970. A serious set of groove-heavy Jazz, and what a lineup! Woody was about 26 at the time and really coming into his own at this point and this was recorded right before his epic "Blackstone Legacy". He was also part of the Joe Henderson live ensemble around this time, appearing on those excellent Lighthouse sides. Solid. And the lovely 32 Jazz reissue cover. Dorn had an ear for music but his choices for reissue artwork leaves one wondering. Gives the BN LT series a run for it's money Ain't it funky now?
Agree, his entire run on Black Jazz was killer. Too bad his discography is so lean after that. I understand he's done some touring recently though.
The Jazz Couriers: Live In Morecambe 1959 - Tippin' Tubby Hayes: Tenor Sax, Vibraphone Ronnie Scott: Tenor Sax Terry Shannon: Piano Jeff Clyne: Double Bass Bill Eyden: Drums Live from The Tivoli Restaurant & Ballroom, Morecambe, Lancashire on Wednesday, March 25th, 1959. Another lost classic from Gearbox Records, mono. Recorded not long before their breakup and the opening of Ronnie's own club. Interesting for those familiar with Clyne's work as he would soon appear with the Spontaneous Music Ensemble as well as playing on those landmark CBS Tony Oxley albums "The Baptized Traveler" and "Four Compositions For Sextet". Unfortunately the only complaint with this historic reissue is that his Double Bass is quite low in the mix. And yes, the album title and opener are named for their rendition of the Horace Silver composition.
I don't know the mediocre rhythm section was a turn off. Just kidding. For what ever reason it's been a hard title to track down at the shops I visit. Yeah that cover of Caravan is as advertised. Wow.
