Tonight's enjoyment... Thelonious Monk - The London Collection Black Lion MZCB-1365/6 Recorded at Chappell Studios, London, November 15th, 1971.
Further Explorations By The Horace Silver Quintet (Blue Note) CD with Art Farmer (trumpet), Clifford Jordan (tenor sax), Horace Silver (piano), Teddy Kotick (bass), Louis Hayes (drums) Recorded 1958 A very likeable and listenable session. The RVG CD edition sounds fine too.
Tokyo Adagio - Charlie Haden | Gonzalo Rubalcaba (Impulse!) CD Recorded live at the Blue Note, Tokyo in 2005. Released 2015 The CD was mastered by Mark Wilder. It's been a while since I last heard this notable live performance from Charlie Haden (bass) and Gonzalo Rubalcaba (piano). Although this album was issued on impulse! it would not be out of place listed in the "listening to Classical Music" thread.
Breakfast Dance and Barbecue - Count Basie and his Orchestra featuring Joe Williams with Marshal Royal (alto sax), Frank Wess (alto & tenor sax & flute), Frank Foster, Billy Mitchell (tenor sax), Charlie Fawlkes (baritone sax), Thad Jones, Joe Newman, Wendell Culley, Snooky Young, Harry "Sweets" Edison , (trumpets), Al Grey, Henry Coker, Benny Powell (trombones), Count Basie (piano), Freddie Green (guitar), Eddie Jones (bass), Sonny Payne (drums) Recorded live at the Americana Hotel, Miami, 1959. The CD edition also includes 10 extra tracks, all originally issued on Mosaic MD8-135. CD mastered by Ron McMaster Top ranking Basie!
Late night groove! These guys never disappoint. Dig that funky cover, baby! The 3 Sounds - Vibrations Blue Note TOCJ-8713 1965 Piano, Organ – Gene Harris Bass – Andrew Simpkins Drums – Kalil Madi
Drums Unlimited - Max Roach (Atlantic) CD with Max Roach (drums), James Spaulding & Roland Alexander (alto sax), Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Ronnie Mathews (piano), Jymie Merritt (bass) Dated 1966 I never realised what I gem this session was until very recently.
George Benson - Beyond The Blue Horizon (1971) original '71 CTI Records CTI 6009 WLP (VAN GELDER stampers) George Benson - guitar Ron Carter - bass Jack DeJohnetter - drums Clarence Palmer - organ Michael Cameron; Albert Nicholson - percussion Some really nice playing that fits the mood on a laidback Sunday evening perfectly. Incidentally, this album was re-released in '79 with radically different artwork:
Sound quality is as good as you would expect from the trio as with most ECM releases of late. It was recorded in 1998 (not that long ago) but sounds fresh to me and the band is in fine form. The performances are quite nice with a highlight rendition of Santa Claus Is Coming To Town which the crowd received very well. It strays well off of the traditional melody very quickly into the song and Jarrett makes it his own before returning to familiarity. The recordings are stereo as can be seen on the OBI strip on the image.
Following up with a Verve offering by the Sounds. The performance is good and as high quality as usual from these guys but it just doesn't have the 'oomph' one would expect from a Blue Note recording. Maybe it's because it's more of a Gene Harris led session as hinted at in the title) or that it's Creed Taylor produced. Gelder remains the recording engineer so I would have expected no less than usual. Either way, it's still a very enjoyable listen and the sound quality does not disappoint. The 3 Sounds - Blue-Genes Verve (1962) POCJ-2749 Piano – Gene Harris Bass – Bill Dowdy Drums – Andrew Simpkins
Grant Green - Nigeria Blue Note (1962) TOCJ-50284 Guitar – Grant Green Piano – Sonny Clark Bass – Sam Jones Drums – Art Blakey
...I’m a fan of Mr. Pope and this album. Bought this upon release. If anyone digs this one check out Clutchy Hopkins for more of this sound. Sources say that The Misled Children and Clutchy Hopkins are one & the same.
