doo - bop | MILES DAVIS (Warner Bros. Masters/Warner Jazz) CD

    Recorded 1991 / Released 1992

Not to everyone's taste what with the funk and hip-hop mix, but for me it unexpectedly just about hit that move and groove button on every track.

Not gonna lie- Doo Bop was the only late-period Miles album I actually enjoyed. I haven't heard all of his 80's albums, mind you, but I've heard enough to know that it's not really my cup of tea...but I liked Doo Bop, don't ask me why.

When you have listened to some albums you call all time favorites for 40+ years it may seem odd to call an album you have had for only two years an all time favorite but here it is.

NP from the Mosaic Turrentine set:

Stanley Turrentine ‎– A Chip Off The Old Block

With Shirley Scott, Blue Mitchell, Earl May & Al Harewood. Very bluesy, and I'm liking the B-side tunes the most.

Yep. Miles' 1980s output is decidedly hit-or-miss. This is one of the misses.

I guess I admire the effort more than the result, but there are definitely some inspired moments.

    From the Turrentine Mosaic NP:

Stanley Turrentine ‎– In Memory Of

With Blue Mitchell, Curtis Fuller, Bob Cranshaw, Herbie Hancock & Otis Finch. Just starting this one with Fried Pies & hoping to enjoy it more than A Chip Off the Old Block which to me was some serious B-grade Blue Note material. I already had the recent SHM reissue of the Jubilee Shout!!! which I do like but overall this Turrentine Mosaic is a bit disappointing and I'm surprised by that.

Django Reinhardt - Peche a la Mouche. Fascinating 2-CD set including his later electric works. "Unique" is one of the most abused words in English, but it applies to Django.

I have In Memory Of and thought it was solid but it's been a few years since I've listened. Good excuse to get it out and revisit.

I have bought it this year. In my opinion, Cook and Morton have been too much ungenerous. Matt Collar on All Music Guide gives four stars rating. It is an overrated judgment, but I think that on some tunes Prez, though at the end of his hard life, has grown his fine phrasing.

[IMG] Picked up the new 3LP version. Sublime to say the least. Had to watch the movie after that.

  17. Wrapping up my 'Miles on Warner' sessions with this live one - another 'hit and miss' selection. I doubt I will listening to it all the way through again any time soon.

    Next from the Turrentine Mosaic:

    Stanley Turrentine ‎– Mr. Natural

From '64 with Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, Lee Morgan, Bob Cranshaw and Ray Barretto. And this picks up where In Memory Of left off and is a great set of music. These last 2 discs in the Turrentine Mosaic are definitely more of what I expected from this set and really make the purchase worth it seeing that these records aren't so easy to obtain. Another Story is next and I'm looking forward to giving it a listen.
