No way. Love Me Till The Sun Shines is one of my favorite songs on the album. Different strokes, as they say.

I should give it another shot.
I think because I heard a few key tracks already on Kronikles, I wasn’t blown away by the album after hearing Face to Face and Village Green.
There are no wrong answers :agree:

True. Like I said, different strokes. I think it's my favorite Kinks album. Although with stiff competition from Face To Face and VGPS.

I pretty much could pick any album from Face To Face to Muswell Hillbillies as my favorite. But it can vary from day to day. I tend to generally favor Something Else and Arthur on average, but Ray was extra special in those years. So everything was prime stuff.

Yeah those were definitely the Kinks golden years. I'm in the process of listening to Face To Face through Lola Vs in a row. Such great music.

The Kinks would be a much poorer band without Dave's contributions, both as guitarist (and his raw attack on those early singles was as much a part of their appeal as Ray's lyrics) and as a songwriter in his own right.
I've seen him on his most recent solo tours, and while he's definitely showing his age the setlists - solo songs, deep catalog Kinks Klassics and a few of the big early hits - were at least as satisfying as the ones I've seen the Kinks do.

Oh yeah. Dave's definitely an integral part of the band. His guitar playing notwithstanding, he's also a pretty darn good songwriter. Any other band and he would have been the big star. Unfortunately, his brother, one of the best songwriters of the rock era, was in the band with him.

How was "I'll Remember" not a single and a huge hit song? One of the Kinks sadly overlooked classics IMHO

    Agreed.
Great song. (Among so many by this band)

Rare track... and one of me faves.

Note: it's not on "Something Else" proper, but as a bonus track.

Lyrics for "Polly" (two posts above)

Polly wouldn't listen to her mama
Polly wouldn't listen to her papa
She tried to make the swinging city scene
And now there's not a place that Polly hasn't been

    Polly, pretty, pretty Pollyanna
    Pretty, pretty Pollyanna
    Pretty Polly Garter
Oh, I think that pretty Polly should have stayed at home

Pretty Polly, dressed as jolly as can be
She's so darling, all the fellas do agree
And half a million people can't be wrong
Oh, I think that pretty Polly should have stayed at home

Polly wrote a letter to her mama
Polly made confessions to her papa
Mummy's proud 'cause Polly's still in chains
She's happy now her baby's coming home again

Pretty Polly, she learned that life is just a game
She is sorry, she just had to break the chains
And Mama knows 'cause mama was the same
Oh, she's happy now her baby's coming home again

    Polly, pretty, pretty Pollyanna
Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty Pollyanna, Pollyanna
    Pretty Polly Garter

    Oh, Polly, pretty, pretty Pollyanna
Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty Pollyanna, Pollyanna
    Pretty Polly Garter
Oh, I think that pretty Polly should have stayed at home

Listening to Face To Face through Percy in a row and so far I've heard Face To Face, Something Else By, and I'm half way through VGPS and I'm starting to think these 3 are are a 3 way tie for my favorite Kinks album. They're all so good and each shows growth from the one before it. This 3 album run equals The Beatles Rubber Soul, Revolver, & Sgt Pepper run easily.

Face To Face often gets shortchanged, as fans fawn over Something Else / VGPS / Arthur, but it's one of my favorites.

I actually prefer Face To Face to Arthur. I like them both a lot but I think FTF has stronger songs.

I'm a short-changer... never warmed up to Face To Face, but I kontinue to fawn over Something Else / VGPS / Arthur!

    Face To Face
has the best Kinks Kover, however -- how such a great, artistic band kould have so many mediorce kovers is beyond me.

Well, you can't go wrong with those 3 albums. Among the 60s best. Maybe even among the whole rock era's best.

So lately I've been spending a lot of time listening to 'Preservation Act I', and I really think this album has gotten a bad rap. It's pretty solid through and through.

It's been mentioned somewhere that Lou Reed really liked this album, and when I listen to "One of the Survivors" I can see why. That song could have been on 'Legendary Hearts' or some other late 70s/early 80s Lou album. Same with "The Hard Way" off of 'Schoolboys'.

@bvb1123 Don't overlook Kontroversy. That's where the Golden Run starts and doesn't stop until the end of Showbiz.

Percy has some really good songs on it, including one of Ray's best, "Dreams". I wonder why he pretty much wasted these songs on the soundtrack to such a little known film.

In that period of time, Ray couldn't write ANY bad songs (ohh, there must be a weak one somewhere, but it's all relative). Even songs that he considered to be "average" were close to top notch. So his "throwaways" on Percy are still golden nuggets.

And maybe Ray did indeed think that Percy (the film) was going to be a huge smash hit. So maybe he actually gave them some excellent tunes on purpose:
