Any thoughts on this film? I thought it was a fun flick with a wonderful performance by Robert Preston.

Its in my pile of DVDs to watch. Haven't seen it in 20 years. Had it on VHS and watched it several times.
    Love Preston in it.

I always liked it; always thought of it as a poor man's Star Wars.

I think your confused. A video game whiz kid scores a high game and gets turned into a pilot in an intergalactic war on the other side of the galaxy. Preston is the recruiter who realizes he has a problem here.
Maybe your thinking of Battle Beyond The Stars with Richard Thomas(Seven Samurai in space)?

Most people I know of reference Star Wars when talking about The Last Starfighter. It must be the scene in the galactic space hanger with all of the pilots and ships that triggers the comparison to Star Wars.

Honestly, EVERY space based movie was compared to Star Wars including Star Trek.

The computer graphics were mind-blowing in 1984!

Would you prefer if they used Un Chien Andolou instead?

I saw it when it came out specifically to see Robert Preston, as I'm a big fan of his. It was his last appearance in a movie, though he did some television work after it was released. He died in 1987 aged only 68. He was somewhat selective about the roles he accepted, I always thought that "The Last Starfighter" was an odd choice for him. He was good in it, as usual. I also enjoyed Dan O'Herlihy as Grig, another actor I greatly admire.

JOKE! It is probably the best adaptation of Ender's Game ever made. JOKE!

All kidding aside, it is one of the best sci-fi movies of the '80's.

Great movie. Better than Star Wars. One of the great movie quotes of all time. When Alex asks if the other Starfighters are dead, Grig says " Death is a primitive concept. I prefer to think of them as battling evil in another dimension."

My girl hates this movie. Whenever she is on my nerves I threaten to watch it. Works every time.

I'm not confused; you're being too literal. It's not an exact copy of Star Wars but they do share similar traits.

My favorite quotes from the movie:

Alex: How many star fighters are left?

    Griggs: including yourself?

    Alex: Yes.

    Griggs: One!

The Last Starfighter is just like Star Wars. Both have young men who would rather be out having fun but have serious responsibilities at home that keep them there. They long to get out of their small world and explore what life has to offer. They are stuck until a wise old man shows up and opens up a new world to them. They reluctantly accept their new responsibility and end up saving the day.

    Nuff said!
