What band out there that is closest to Megadeth's style. By that I mean has highly technical playing, attitude, really good melodies, shredding, relevant lyrics and no weak points.
I second this. That said, an album more directly tied to Megadeth's sound during, say, the Poland/Samuelson years would have to be Dyoxen - First Among Equals. I would say that Anacrusis were more in the realm of progressive metal after Reason. One of the most slept-on bands in the American metal canon so yes, definitely.
As for my own recommendations, I'd say this list would be sufficient (for now): Coroner - Punishment for Decadence Artillery - By Inheritance Watchtower - Control and Resistance Annihilator - Alice in Hell Mekong Delta - The Music of Erich Zann Toxik - Think This Wolf Spider - Kingdom of Paranoia Destruction - Release from Agony Deathrow - Deception Ignored Realm - Suiciety Hexenhaus - Awakening
The fact that these guys were recording stuff like Metal's No Sin, Battle Axe and Dignified Disaster in '83/'84 is absurd. One of the most underrated bands to come from the U.S.
Their best album by far. Contains a mix of influences like Toxik and Realm with a helping of Zenk-era Sieges Even for good measure. Really not even a little metalcore to be found here.
Arrived but haven't got a chance to listen to: Ten Illuminati Stephen Pearcy View To A Thrill Red Dragon Cartel Patina Nordic Union Second Coming Due this week: Pretty Maids Classic Albums box
Pretty Maids; did they do a song in the early-mid 80s with the line "ice cold killer?" Seems to recall they were reasonably serviceable.
@Trillmeister @Northwind @Curveboy @GodShifter Been listening to this one a lot again. One of Australia's many great curiosities in the genre and a band that deserved better.
Equator by Uriah Heep; an album I'd somehow missed... until now. If M. Box was before me (presumably chained and shackled, in view of the crimes such a thing represented,) my inquisitorial opener would be a toss up between "why" and "how?" Unlike many trad Heepista, I've got a real soft spot for the predecessor, Head First and in 1982-83 found the soar of Goalby's pipes no unpleasant way to wile away forty minutes or so. But this, this - teeth grinding hurl of "let's conform to some cringeworthy take on the 'sound' of the period" - had me in spasms of flinching disbelief. I mean, I thought UFO took some beating with some of their mid 80s musical bilge-pumping but pah! Amateurs compared to this shocker. Literally, utter, utter shyte from start to finish and given how I'd been feasting on Celebration, the band's 2009 revisitation of largely ancient standards recently, it made me wince, just that little bit more. On the other hand, it could be the result of rather too much Amon Amarth research. Surtur Rising!
I hear about Amon Amarth in the last time quite a bit - what's it all about? Isn't it sort of melodic death metal or so? Or have they changed their sound? Am I missing something being a fan of classic metal and disliking grunted vocals? Any advice regarding their output?
I've just taken my first lecture in the subject so remain radiocatively green; however, the scent of fjørdweed is overpowering and lures me thither; it's probably a step too far, too quickly, following a short sabbatical amongst the Ensiferumi but I'm learning to embrace the inner cookie. An old mosher pal from up north recently recommenced comms and expressed a fondness for the symphonic elements amongst other strands of Steel; I've been excessively self-censured beyond the broadly classical and am resolved to taste more of the smelten pot. And bods like Sanguinus keep lobbing irresistible morsels like that Taramis into the mix: I'm basically retrebling my efforts to live and breath Metal, in all its forms.
It's always challenging (in a good way) to read your posts, especially when I feel the need to answer - sorry, but your writing is just too exceptional to pass it by without mention! Anyway, I wasn't able to get a recommendation (album-wise of theirs) out of your reply. Is there an album you'd call superior to others, or are they all in the same league? I said I dislike grunted vocals, but it's not a no-go, and I'm able to learn. So please, gimme some, Trillmeister (great name, BTW)!
The boys have been a real tear with Mr. Todd La Torre and this looks to continue that trend. Can't wait.
