This sounds cool! Was anyone there - was it a good show or a... a Mats show?

    Yes.

A good show with some 'Mat-isms in there. For example, there's some inside joke where Paul's randomly yelling "murder" as the lyrics to some songs.

This has been widely bootlegged, but can't wait for the official version.

Excellent! As long as the mastering isn't offensive I'll be in for pretty much all Mats archive releases.

I'm wondering if @Guy E might still have been at Maxwells in '86?

Curious. Was Bob already gone by this point in '86? Seems like a Bob sort of set list, with the early punk songs, Fox on the Run, etc.

Great news. I've had the boot from cassette trading since the late 80's. Bring on the Mats Live Archive series.

This is a great, great show - Hitchin' A Ride, right into Nowhere Man...they were "on" this night...Pretty sure it was the last tour with Bob. There's also a sound-check, and some film floating around. Hoping this is the beginning of Bob Mehr managing their archives.

    interesting.

I was in Binghamton in 1986, drove into NYC in a snowstorm to try an and see them at The Ritz on Feb 1, show was sold out, bought a couple records at Sounds on St Marks and drove back to Binghamton, got some sleep and saw Husker Du with Soul Asylum at SUNY B on Feb 2. Finally saw the 'Mats summer '86 at the Ritz (my one time I caught them with Bob). Also had a 'Mats near miss in the summer of '83 when they opened for R.E.M. I had just discovered R.E.M. and had no idea who "The Replacements" were, sounded like a dumb name, so we blew off that opening act, Oh The Regret! Anyways this Feb 4 release will be a welcome addition, a long lost make up for that missed feb 1 concert and my 6 hour round trip drive in the snow.

Maybe it'll inspire Rhino to reprint their reissue of Tim. It's become very rare on CD, even though the digital version is still available (suggesting Rhino still has the rights, though I suppose things could be more complicated).

I'm encouraged by the fact that the tracklist shows the complete setlist in performance order. I'm hoping that means no edits at all.

It's good to see any product come out, but I wish they'd gone with a show that's not already widely available in soundboard quality. There's lots of legendary shows that haven't been booted or are only out there via audience tapes.

I was still DJ'ing at the club one night a week, but I wasn't at this show. February 4, 1986... that was right about the time that I moved into Manhattan with my [now] wife and I wasn't going across the river for shows unless I was "working."

I'm pretty sure this is the professional live recording that WB produced, but then decided not to release. The scuttlebutt at the time was that Paul was too coked-out and his vocals suffered... too raw/strained. I guess the snowflakes of time have softened that critical posture.

I've known about this release for awhile... I can't wait. I thought it was coming out on the revitalized Coyote Records, Maxwell's owner Steve Fallon's label. Maybe he's releasing the vinyl.

I don't think this picture was from that night... probably not (with an opening act). I love this photo. I walked through those doors to the back room thousands of times... and my vision was usually just as fogged-up as this pic.

My recollection is that WB decided pretty quickly not to release it and I don't think it went to the final mixing stage. Of course, here at SH the mastering is going to be fretted about, but I'm very curious what they'll do in the final mix.

There's some pretty good video of this show's soundcheck on youtube. I wonder if they kept filming at the show.
