I found out about this band from Nirvana covering Love Buzz on their first album, only to learn they were the originators of the song Venus which I thought for years was a Bananarama original.

Yup, great band. They had a series of great hit singles over here in Holland. A few of their albums were pretty good, most were quite uneven. They were mainly a singles band, I suppose.

"Mighty Joe" and "Venus" are the two obvious ones I know, and like, but I'm actually enjoying these others from the youtube links.

I guess it's a similar-ish, in some places, (maybe more to era than anything else) sound to Jefferson Airplane, except Shocking Blue sounds better for the bulk of it. Only really liked "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit" from Jefferson...

I'd love to find an inexpensive tastefully mastered CD of their stuff. I've heard of one comp CD, but can't find it.

"Venus" was a straight ripoff of a folk song (Joanna), which was also covered by Mama Cass's first group The Big Three. It's somewhere on YouTube....

Shocking Blue At Home from 1969 is a good record, on cd available on Repertoire and mastered by fellow SH-member Eroc at The Ranch.

'Daemon Lover' is one of my favourite songs by them:

And the album this came from, 'Scorpio Dance', was pretty good too.

They weren't a "one hit wonder" band, certainly.

I was on of those who believed that they were a "one hot wonder" band, but then I discovered this album and I did change my mind, I strongly recommend it:

I must say that I purchased a 2CD singles a's/b's collection a while back, listened to it and wasn't terribly impressed overall. I then found a few of their albums, and I'm glad to say that there's a bunch of albums tracks that make some of their singles look pretty terrible.

Some of my fave Shocking Blue trax are- Send Me A Postcard (easily as good as any 60's fuzz guitar rave up!), Shocking You, Long Lonesome Road, Bird of Paradise, and many others.

    Pudding proof!

Despite that uneven quality I have a buddy who has collected 8 cds of their material. I think he had a woody for Mariska.

Please, could you post EAC peaks for this Best Of? Would like to verify if it is a clone of a CNR holland disc with the same cover.

I love "Send Me a Postcard" too! I got it on a cheap import compilation. I'll have to check out some of their other stuff.

That was one of the first cds I ever owned, given to me as a birthday present in the mid to late '80s. I still have it packed away somewhere :righton:

Yes, even if their English was pretty bad at times, I keep hearing one line from "Venus" as "crystal @$$".....

Wasn't Hot Sand the flip side of Venus?
