I strongly 2nd the Mystery Lights recommendation. It's kinda psych/surf in the vein of the Sonics. I am seriously digging it. There are still some Orange copies around at the moment. It's a great album.
That orange vinyl looks choice! If anybody wants to stream the Mystery Lights album to check it out, here ya go: The Mystery Lights streaming debut LP, touring with Night Beats ++ other dates »
Just ordered The Mystery Lights LP and The Menahan Street Band's The Crossing LP along with Saun & Starr's 7" of "Hot Shot/Look Closer"
I'm in agreement here. Not all of her song choices are equally inspired, in my opinion. But she's a great performer. I think of Joe Cocker (RIP). A great, soulful performer. Not every song on every album is top notch.
20pct off sale if you buy 2lps. Did a little damage today Sha la das - new color 45 Bob and gene - I can be cool 45 James Hunter - somethings calling 45 Daptone gold 2 (the first dap gold is a great weekend playlist on vinyl) Sharon jones Christmas (red vinyl)
Nice haul, Guidedbyvoices! Did you pick-up the Ticklah (rocksteady) remix of the Bob and Gene tune, or the original? Daptone sells both, and you can't go wrong with either!
The remix! I have the album, one of my first Daptone downloads after hearing the ghetto power hour sampler. Didn't think I wanted the remix till I heard it. Perfect!
Right on! That remix is so sweet. I blew it by missing-out on the (vinyl) version of the album while Daptone had it in-stock. That's one I want to find.
I've got this goodie on. Not a proper Daptone recording, per se, but Daptone issued the (only) vinyl issue of it (in mono). Great record!
The song minute by minute is fantastic. And produced/recorded by Gabriel Roth (bosco) so close enough for Daptone for me!
Just gonna add my photo of this one for posterity. ...and as an excuse to reiterate that I think it's an outta-sight album.
Got mine today. Standard black vinyl. Might have to track down a color vinyl in the future. Awesome album!
Package came in just in time for the weekend! My Sha la da single came in kind of a camo look , green and brown swirl.
I tried with this - really I did. The main issue here isn't the slight tune that's little more than '60's regurgitation; it's the fact that the first vocalist is terminally flat. This was a hard listen. Ed
Devastating news. I couldn't believe it. I can't wait for that album to be released. I wish Dan could've still been around when it's dropped. Their "I'd Rather Go Blind" single for Daptone is easily on of my faves of the last couple years.
Neat! I can sort've see the camo vibe of the Sha La Das in your pic. Cool that you got one of the colored Bob & Gene 45s, too!
That link led me to this older story on bosco/Gabriel Roth. Beautiful. I feel good supporting Daptone with the quality of music AND the quality of people they are Soul Reviver »
