The summer box office haul is officially down 20% from a year ago. Why do you think that is?

Lucy reminds me of the Matrix. I'll see anything with Scarlett in it.

I think it's a summer without the usual number of potential big ticket items - the studios seem to be saving them for next year.

Gotta assume 2015 will be a BIG year for box office...

In the near future most big studios won't exist there will be more
mergers like with Mgm. The Summer BlockBuster
is offically a big dud. Spielberg and Lucas prediction is slowly but surely is coming true.
Lack or no talent can't sustain Hollywood any further.
Iam glad I don't work in Hollyland . Some people that do
should start saving there pennies I feel it will get worse.

Who says that was a disappointment? I have mostly only seen praise for it.
It's a shame that Smurfs 2 made as much as it though.

Going to the movies isn't exactly cheap family fun especially when your kids want snacks and they always do. Wait a few months and buy the DVD for $12.

I'm sure romantic comedies fared quite well in Europe this month, because of women going to the cinema together while their husbands and boyfriends were watching football. ;)

Hello? Remember the movie theater shootings over the last couple of years? That would be enough to stop anyone from going. The motion picture industry will likely be forced to provide adequate security screenings for all theaters if they want to draw people, that is what this world has come to...

Well it was very well-received critically, but it hasn't really had "legs" at the box office. Anecdotally, I have heard people grumbling about it. I believe the word-of-mouth isn't as strong as it was on the first one.

Where did most past shootings happen? Malls, restaurants, schools, in a street. Do people avoid all these areas now?

I would rather avoid going to a cinema if I had to go through airport-style security checks.

for me it's the super high prices and the lack of a must-see flick. taking my daughter to a matinee, leaving the wife and other boy home, cost me $17 in tickets, let alone food. The blu ray will cost $20 upon release. So if its not a must-see, we wait.

Good. Stop releasing sequels, remakes, comic book adaptations, computer game adaptations, TV adaptations and CGI-infested dribble and hire some proper writers. Also, slash the budget of these $200+ million gambles and make five or six interesting films instead.

I remember the shooting at "Dark Knight Rises" in Colorado and a guy who argued with and then shot another in FL but that's all that come to mind.

Anyone who avoids all movie theaters because of a couple of isolated incidents must be afraid of everything. It's not like there's some epidemic of movie theater shootings..

Mediocre movies? Too much sequels and/or rewrites and remakes. I think the filmmakers have explored all the possibilities of CGI to make noisy movies with an historical context or noisy movies with superheroes. I like gripping action and original stories for my summer blockbusters!

Where'd you get that? The press reviews were very good and I and my family loved it. My wife had to see it twice! Rotten Tomatoes scored it 92/93.

Speaking just for me, I can't stand all the various comic-book flicks. I don't completely hate the genre - I enjoyed Nolan's Batman movies, for example - but I never even liked comic books when I was a kid, and I'm incredulous at their box-office dominance over the last few years. When I saw a preview for an upcoming one, with a raccoon (or something?) as one of the heroes, I thought it was a long-overdue parody of those flicks. But having seen the preview more than once now, I think it's supposed to be taken seriously (so to speak). :faint:

Edit: Guardians of the Galaxy - that's what it is...

The domestic box office suggests that word of mouth was not as strong as it was for the first one. Other indicators of audience opinion have implied similar things.
