It was a sad situation for "There She Goes Again."

That brings us to our final pairing. Remember, you are still voting to eject a song, leaving the Stronger Link standing.

Discussion question: What would your personal final pairing be?

Thanks to all that played and contributed (even while being unwilling to vote). Next up: Another bespectacled rocker--Elvis Costello and IMPERIAL BEDROOM.

    3 There She Goes Again
    4 Mary Anne
    5 The Usual Thing
    6 Rockin' Around In N.Y.C.
    T7 I'll Do Anything
    T7 She Can't Dance
    T9 Girls
    T9 Soldier Of Love
    T11 Not For Me
    T11 Brand New Lover

    Voted for Cynical Girl.

My first impulse for a final pair is There She Goes Again and Mary Anne.

Really a killer power pop album, top to bottom. Glad you chose it.

Thanks for playing the game with this great record, Joey. It was a lot of fun discussing it, even if picking songs to eliminate was essentially an exercise in futility.

Close your eyes and pick any two songs on the record - there's your ideal final pairing. :D

Looking forward to another classic in Imperial Bedroom.

Get outta there, "Someday, Someway." My personal pairing preference would be "Cynical Girl" barely edging out "There She Goes Again."

Ooo, Imperial Bedroom is going to be a fun one.

My personal pairing would be There She goes Again/Maryanne.

    This was cool to watch.

You're welcome, and I'm glad you enjoyed it--even though it was tough picking from the jump.

Cynical Girl for the win. Final pair would be There She Goes Again/Cynical Girl. I like the guitar riffs on these two the most. All the songs were great on this album. Thanks Joey!

    Hmm ? final pairing ?

    Not for me

My favorites are Cynical Girl and Mary Anne, but this album is a total winner, right from start to finish.
  10. I honestly don't understand the love for Cynical Girl at the expense of Mary Ann and some other strong songs. I enjoy Cynical Girl but it's not one of my favs.

    My final two:

    Someday, Someway
    Mary Ann

    "Someday, Someway."

My final pairing would've been "Mary Anne" vs "Girls," or "Mary Anne" vs "There She Goes Again." So, thanks for voting all the best songs off earlier, people!

I'm totally with you on this. 100%. It's mystifying.

But at least it's just nice to know this album seems to get the respect it deserves.

    Voted off Someday.

    Can't really pick among Girls/Cynical Girls/There She Goes/Mary Anne

My final pairing would have been the first six songs on the album versus the final six songs and it would have ended in a tie.

Thanks for starting this thread - there is much to love in the Marshall Crenshaw catalog, but this one towers over all the others. It's like its own greatest hits album.

Too early for me to vote, because this one is TIGHT at the moment.

Someday for the win. Thanks for bringing this out Joey. Made me play it for the first time in years.

My final would have been Someday winning over There She Goes.

So, it goes downhill in a hurry from the first two songs? :)

You're welcome, Greg--that's one of the objectives of this game.

Oh now you chicken out :D

what a stellar album , any song could deserve to win on this one... really a gem in the Album world :righton:

Oh, no, it's not me being a chicken, but rather a prudent host. I withhold my vote in close battles so as not to create a tie at the end. If my choice would knot things up, then I don't cast a vote. I'm like the cook that doesn't get to eat her own cooking.

No no no no no. I've come so far with my Cynical Girl...we cannot fail now.

I voted off the hit single, but my personal final pair would be "There She Goes Again" beating "Mary Anne."

It looks like voting is closed before I got here. I'd have kept Cynical Girl, and my perfect last-two pairing would have been Cynical Girl/Not For Me. Incredibly melodic, great lyrics, one song about finding the perfect girl, the other about realizing you didn't find the perfect one and moving on.

"Cynical Girl" knew it was missing the title, as

was crowned The Strongest Link on MARSHALL CRENSHAW.

Stand by--IMPERIAL BEDROOM is about to start.

I can live with this. CG as second, gives her coveted griping privileges.

This entire series of polls was one excellent thrill ride.
