My first game since Joey's retirement, so here goes, this time for the 1986 record Parade.

DQ: When did you first hear this record and what was your initial impressions?

    somebody voted for Mountains?!?!

but to answer the DQ: I first heard it round about 1990 I guess (being 13 years old), after having heard some other Prince albums, with PR & SOTT my first ones. I didn't immediately like it, it really had to grow on me. It did :). My favorite song was Girls & Boys, and it still is.

"Venus de Milo" + "Do You Lie?"

DQ: I first heard it shortly after it came out and I didn't immediately love it, but it's grown on me through the years and is now one of my favorite Prince discs. Of course, I pretty much love everything he did in the 80s now.

I heard it upon release, and I think I loved it right away (save for a couple of the more stylized tunes). At the very least it was a big improvement on Around the World in a Day. The movie, on the other hand ....

Went for VDM & DUL? This is going to one very hard competition over the next few rounds. It's not just one of my favourite Prince albums but of my favourite albums by anyone. Bought it around 1988 and loved it to death then. Now, it's so timeless sounding thanks to the glorious work of Claire Fischer. And the band - THE BAND!!!

Right who voted for Mountains this early on??!!?? Outside NOW! :realmad::wantsome:

"Venus de Milo" and "Do You Lie?" are the only acceptable selections, and I still enjoy them.

I really didn't dig into Prince until the early 90's, and this might be my favorite of his, or at least in the top 3.

I went with 'Venus De Milo' and, sacrilegeously, 'Sometimes It Snows in April'. That's one of my favourite Prince ballads, but this is such a strong album I like everything else more!

Release date in 1986. I was in school and I had to walk a moderate distance to the nearest record store.

Wanted the CD but WB didn't release the "Parade" CD day/date, so I got the vinyl instead!

    Loved it from the start!

Mountain and Do U Lie? Not bad songs by any means, but just don't stack up against the rest.

DQ:2015 is when I first heard this, and I loved it right off the bat.

I'm going with the crowd here.

While I love Mountains and Kiss, the rest of the album I find mostly pretentious and not too enjoyable to listen to.

I chose the same two. I could never understand the love for "Sometimes", it's too over the top maudlin for me. I was a HS junior when this record came out, bought it release day and loved it immediately.

I bought it day of release on cassette and played it in my car. Didn’t like it too much but I was a huge fan and stuck with it. When the CD came out several weeks later I popped it in and it blew me away sonically. Still had a hard time loving the music. It really wasn’t my cup of tea. Mountains was the best song for me because at least it sounded like Prince!
Parade took years to grow on me. I learned to appreciate the subtleties and the new approach. Love it now (so much that I cannot vote to eliminate anything!)
If anything I’m in favor of expanding Parade with other strong tracks from the era...but that’s for another thread.

I had been with Prince since Controversy and I loved Around The World In A Day. When I first heard Parade the day it came out I was a bit stymied. But like any great work of art it took repeated playings to understand its genius.
