I agree that $35 is a little high, although it's a UDI. I imagine the reserve is $25 or so, which is closer to parity.

I finally picked up TOMMY (Deluxe Edition). Liner notes say that we are hearing the original stereo mix for the first time since the album's release in 1969, the master mixdown tapes having been recovered for this release. What then was the source for the MFSL TOMMY?

    Pete's personal copy, supposedly.

Thanks for the info. on pricing. I don't purport to be an MFSL expert, so when I saw a major title like Tommy in UDI form (Japanese pressing) for $35, I thought that was a good deal. I am surprised that it goes so cheap.

Hey Keith, it's still a decent deal for a UD1. The UD1's are becoming more and more rare as time moves on. You'll notice on Ebay that those albums that have both the UD1 and UD2 pressings are now 99% UD2's, whereas 1 year ago they were 50/50.

    You did good.

Dave, thanks for the info. Actually, I didn't do good, as I didn't buy the disc. ;)

For now, I will stick with the original Japanese MCA and West German Polydor versions, which I still need to compare. I like each one on its own, but I need to compare them carefully. Of course, I plan to get the SACD. :)

Please let us know the results of your comparison between the MCA and Polydor versions. I think at this point for me, I'll pass on the SACD, but that Polydor does sound kind of interesting to me. ;)

Dave, O.K. I am way behind on my comparisons. At this point, I have only listened casually to the MCA and Polydor versions at different times, so it would be pointless for me to comment on the sound.

    You said:

Well, if you are into aesthetics, the discs have the orange coating and black text that one sees occasionally on early Polydor discs.

Keith, whenever you do have the time for a shootout, I'd really be interested in which has the best sound. As long as it doesn't have frilly's I'm not really concerned with the aesthetics.

So would I! ;) I'll let you know.

As a collector of CBS/Sony first pressings, you know that I am not overly caught up with aesthetics. ;)

Me too! :D When you hear how good the music that's on these first pressings can actually sound, it really makes the digital world all worth while. ;)
