All in all it looks like they did the best they could.

There was 100 -120 songs to license and they had a 96% success rate. I'm trying to find the 4-5 missing songs.

    Doors - Riders
    Doors - Light My Fire
Fleetwoods - Come Softly to Me
Neil Young - Long My You Run

I see these song lists have listed Jerry Keller - Here Comes The Sun. Is that really the case, or do they mean
Jerry Keller - Here Comes Summer ?

I get the other three, but The Fleetwoods? That's a stock Capitol/EMI track available on about 50 various artists compilations. That one shouldn't be a big deal at all.

My first thought, as well. But (as you know, of course) it's one thing to include the song on CDs (Capitol/EMI can do that without anyone's consent), it's another to include it in a video medium (where they need the consent of the publisher, as well as Capitol/EMI). I guess whoever owns the publishing has delusions of grandeur.

Do you think the Doors and/or Neil wanted too much or simply gave a flat "no"?

I have Neil doing LMYR on an official Vancouver 2010 Olympic DVD.

Might have been a bit of both: very high rates for the Doors, "no" from Neil Young.

Could be both. What I've been told is that the publishing rates (sync license) are one fee, and then the master recording rights are usually roughly the same fee. So if one is $20K, the other is $20K. There could well be exceptions. When The Beatles' allowed "Tomorrow Never Knows" to be used in Mad Men (twice), the total fee was $200K, which is surprisingly low for them.

If the Neil song is missing, it'll severely hurt the episode it's used in. Virtually the whole song is used, as I recall it, and the whole episode kinda builds to the moment.

Well, they replaced it with Chuck Berry's "Run Rudolph Run," which is fairly close.

I guess this doesn't bode well for "Light My Fire" and "Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar)" on the upcoming WKRP DVD set. (In the S1 episode "Fish Story").

Another Wonder Years question...In syndication, there is an episode where the game Monopoly is mentioned by name, but the word "Monopoly" is edited out (the audio cuts out). Has it been restored on the DVD?

(The edit was present when "The Hub" aired the episode...funny when you consider The Hub is jointly owned by Hasbro, who owns the rights to Monopoly).

Very useful post. Can't wait to see what the early recipients of the WKRP box have to say here soon...

The episode in question is "The Family Car" S3 Ep. 7. "Long May You Run" was there in The Hub's syndication run, but it was replaced in this TV1 Australian airing.

Shame...as it was one of those "pivotal" songs for me.

More surprising is they managed to clear The Beach Boys.

It’s really weird that Long May You Run was cleared by Neil 25 years ago to air in the show and now it is a no. What changed?

When I was posting in the Doors thread earlier today I realized I made a mistake with the Fleetwoods. I think was listed under a different episode between the fan list and 2014 list.

I feel like Doors license everywhere. Why not this? Also, what's up with Blood Sweat and Tears? They should be happy to get some royalties as they are largely forgotten nowadays.

Not bad. Ignoring the replacement instrumental tracks, the David Clayton-Thomas remakes of his work with Blood Sweat and Tears, and the Al Green sound-alike, here are only six replacement songs (well, five, actually, but the Richie Havens cover of Here Comes the Sun is replaced twice):

From the episode, "Heart of Darkness":
    1. Riders on the Storm- The Doors
      • used replacement song Children of the Night
    2. Here Comes the Sun- Richie Havens
      • used replacement song Train to Nowhere
From the episode, "How I'm Spending My Summer Vacation":
    1. Light My Fire- The Doors
      • used replacement song Love's on Fire
From the episode, "The Family Car":
    1. Long May You Run- Neil Young
      • used replacement song Keep Your Motor Running
From the episode, "The Tree House":
    1. Whatever Will Be, Will Be (Que Sera, Sera)
      • used replacement song Let's Call The Whole Thing Off
From the episode, "The Wonder Years":
    1. Here Comes the Sun- Richie Havens
      • used replacement song Train to Nowhere

Time-Life did an outstanding job clearing the music on this set. Once again only one major bummer being the Neil Young track (looks like they replaced it with the same music used in the Australian syndicated clip posted above). Kudos to them for the transparency on the few things they couldn't clear.

Actually, it makes the few holdouts look really bad. It's arguably a form of revenge.
