    Hello Friends.

I hope everyone had a good week.

I'm very upset about the bombings yesterday in Spain. I don't know anyone there but my heart goes out to the those hurt and the families of the victims. This trend toward mass murder has got to be stopped. I don't mean to sound trite but we really do need to learn to live together.

Ok, now on with the post...

I wanted to find a good chart this week as this will be my last weekly post for a while. First, I'm going on vacation for two weeks and second, I think it's time to take break. Last week's chart only had nine responses. I know that some members enjoy these weekly posts and I appreciate the comments, especially Ed's weekly reviews. However, the recent lack of views or responses tells me that most of our members have lost interest. Or, maybe I've been picking particularly weak charts lately.

This week I picked my favorite year, 1965 and a chart that has a good mix of tunes. This would make another great mix disc. The albums, maybe not so great. The soundtracks and "adults" still ruled.

So, I going to take some time off, relax, unwind and think about the next series of posts. Any ideas?

I hope you all have a great weekend and a good couple of weeks. I'll try to check in while I'm on vacation. I'm leaving for Tampa on Tuesday and then we're headed for Sarasota the week after and I may drive a little further down the coast and see where we end up. Truthfully, I don't care where I am as long as it's warm and I'm not a work!

I'll be back in a few weeks.

Wow, how did "Jolly Green Giant" get in with this company? I had no idea it was a spoof on "Big Boy Pete"... Sure loved that song as a kid (as I did "Birds And The Bees", engineered by my buddy Stan Ross at Gold Star).

Well, first of all, my friend...HAVE A GREAT OLD TIME!!!:edthumbs:

As for the lack of responses, well....I can think of ONE recent chart that had a few responses too many ....I think it's just a variable thing, possible that perhaps Monday is a better time to post the chart? Maybe the "Livin' For The Weekend" thing has caught up with many here, and they don't have the time or interest do post. Be assured that I'll always be around to reply......:D

Okay, on the the nitty gritty:

    Singles

    1. A
    2. A+
    3. A+
    4. B+
    5. B
    6. A
    7. B+
    8. B+
    9. B-
    10. A+

    Albums

    1. A-
    2. A-
    3. A-
    4. B+
    5. C+
    6. A-
    7. C
    8. B-
    9. B-
    10. B-

Singles: 10.0....A- all the way! Albums: 8.1....Solid B.

Well, what is there to say about that batch of 45's...not a bad week when a Kingsmen novelty tune--fun but silly--is the 'worst' of the lot! The Akens hit hasn't held up well for this listener, though it is catchy; interesting that some otherwise 'lightweight' acts--Lewis, Hermits, Gerry--came up with pretty near their best with these singles. Of course, the Beatles, Motown, and Roger Miller tracks are bonafide classics. "Hurt So Bad" is, I think, the most underrated tune here, and IMO, superior to the far better known(but hardly a slouch!)"Goin' Out Of My Head"....

The albums chart is an interesting bunch, but not as 'adult' as might first appear...true, Goulet, Streisand, and the MFL soundtrack sold to our parents, but the rest, well...mostly bought by us, and a few by them, too, I'd bet, like the GOLDFINGER soundtrack(and yes, you can play this one without the movie, and it's memorable all the way through, and great in stereo!)and the Righteous Brothers(get the mono on this one!)....of the rest, MARY POPPINS was bought by parents for their kids(in part), as it was an enchanting film that delighted kids of all ages, another one that brings back very fond memories. BEATLES' '65 suffers from the horrendous reverb overload, but if one goes to the mono and tries to forget that, well...hard to bash a great set of songs as these(just think UK mixes!....that leaves a fair but hardly exciting BEACH BOYS CONCERT, and one of the better Motown albums of the time, the Supremes' 2nd Lp(again, go for the mono if you can get one)....

Great charts. I didn't know that Robert Goulet had a top ten album.

  7. Ed Bishop

Not only was it his only top ten album, it was also the only one 'certified gold' by the R.I.A.A.....from 1962 to 1970, he charted 17 albums total....no doubt his success in the broadway show CAMELOT must have had a lot to do with that kind of staying power....

Great chart, John. I was 11 and this is really good chart for an 11 year old. I too was nuts about the Jewel Akens "Birds and the Bees", "This Diamond Ring", "Ferry Cross the Mersey' and of course The Beatles "Eight Days A Week"! I don't remember the Kingsman's "The Jolly Green Giant" getting air play around Chicago.

As far as the album charts, the "Beatles 65" and the DC5's "Coast to Coast" got a lot of play at my house. "Coast to Coast" is one of my favorite DC5 albums, that and "Weekend In London"!

  10. Grant

Grant Life is a rock, but the radio rolled me!

    Not a bad singles chart.

I don't think the low responses have been because of a lack of interest. I think it's because either they are weak charts or everyone loves what's on them and there's no disagreement. Let's face it. People like disagreement.

Like most of 'em except the Roger Miller thing never did much for me. "Ferry" I just got tired of. Now as far as Herman is concerned, he's a little goofy, but this week's title by him is OK in my book.

Tempts, Supremes, Righteous Bros. etc. records are classic tracks.

Yeah, but it doesn't work unless you throw "Winchester Cathedral" into the equation!  ...and we're safe from that for at least another, oh, nine months or so....

Hey, I like these posts, look forward to them every week. I'll admit I'm guilty of not posting too much on them, but I like them just the same and hope you reconsider. Besides, Ed's assessments pretty much sum it up for me (with the exception of his opinion of Theme For A Summer Place) so I figure there's not much worthwhile or constructive for me to add.

I disagree with this statement! ;)

Dave B, enjoy your time off!

When you come back, why don't you try doing these on a Sunday night or Monday morning? I enjoy them and I am sure others do, too. Perhaps the timing is off.... ya know?

Robert Goulet. Now that's a name I've not heard of in a while! :)

Another great chart - what a week!

Thanks, Dave, for the regular postings. This has been loads of fun, but maybe it is time to take a break - or at least post the charts a bit less frequently. It's long been a favorite part of my Friday routine, but I can only blame myself for not contributing as much as I used to. I've been busy lately, and haven't been checking the forum that often on the weekends. Maybe it would be good to try posting earlier in the week.

    9. The Jolly Green Giant.................The Kingsman
    10. Hurt So Bad...........................Little Anthony And The Imperials

All the singles bring back great memories of being a teenager at an interesting time [god - it's almost 40 years ago] - all but The Jolly Green Giant. I couldn't remember it at all, so I went to all music - then to CDnow and listened to their 30 second clip and it all came back to me. Thanks for the memory jolt.

Stop! In The Name Of Love brings back a more recent memory as the Vice Principal, the shop teacher and I dressed in drag and did an air band presentation of this for our students at the school's talent show. What a hoot! you think the choreography for this is easy, you should try it! I gained a bit more respect for the Supremes. I also found out that I looked ridiculous in a formal gown with a beard. If there is a next time, I think I'll shave.

The album chart generally leaves me cold - guess as you said it was still dominated by the "adults" - did we ever grow up?

Your weekly chart post is great - I enjoy reading it but am generally just too lazy to respond. Please, take a break if you need one, but don't abandon the project.

A very decent chart with the Fab Four leading the pack.

Music was about to undergo a big change starting in 1966.
