Indy & Michael, There was so many bands like Chocolate Watch Band. A lot of bands fell through the cracks. No money behind them, no promotion (like Michael above me mention) or the masses just didn't pick up on them.

By 1969, garage was dying...sort of. Well, it was turning into things like Mountain("Mississippi Queen"); the innocence had been lost. Ironically, bubblegum music filled the gap to some degree, if not for long. This next dittie--from the spring of '69--comes near the end of the garage line, and it has that spirit, if not origins:

MAGIC SWIRLING SHIP: "Love In Your Eyes"

Released on Cadet 5642(also the Wildweeds label), this was Bobby Bloom's attempt to front his own band(he wrote and sang this one). Already having an association with bubblegum guys Jerry Kasenetz & Jeff Katz, he had them produce this one(remember the Super K label? That pair was always looking for an angle). Another obscure curio from the Ed Archives....

Man this thread is making me drag out all of my Standells, Chocolate Watch Band and assortment of others. Anyway, I'm gong to go for one from the Rhino box set Nuggets II. And the winner is "Break It All" by Los Shackers. It's dance garage at it's finest.

I saw the Chocolate Watchband open up for the Electric Prunes last November in San Francisco at the Great American Music Hall. Awesome show! (The 2nd time I've seen'em). The Watchband even did a cover of 'Take A Heart' by the Sorrows. Cool! The Prunes laid down the fuzz all night and Peter Lewis(of Moby Grape) guested on '7 & 7 Is'. Did I mention it was an awesome show?!!

Dave Aguilar(vocals), Tim Abbott(guitar) and Gary Andrijasevich(drums)are the original members. Alec Palao(Big Beat reissues fame) was playing bass for them.

    HUB KAPP AND THE WHEELS

Here's a cool garage band with a cool picture sleeve (AND a cool story behind its obtainment):
HUB KAPP & THE WHEELS were on CAPITOL (#5215), so this oddity was released around July 1964. They covered two songs, Larry Williams' "Bony Maronie," and the Everly Brothers' "Sigh, Cry, Almost Die." The weird part is: who are these strange dudes?? I've yet to see any reference to their existence in any 45 price guide, or mention in any rock n' roll book I've perused.
From the photo on the must-see-to-believe picture sleeve, they stand across a brick staircase, which looks familiarly like Janns Steps - from the campus of UCLA (a Los Angeles band perhaps?). Now for "the look": Hub Kapp frighteningly resembles Eddie Munster, with a raised Fabian pompadour with sguiggle down the forehead, and huge fake black eyebrows. He stands in front, sporting a short sleeve black bowling jacket, positioned at his folk (?) guitar, cut off at the hips in the photo. Behind him pose the three Wheels, one holding drumsticks, one with an electric guitar, and the other straddling his bass. The Wheels all sport shades and matching grey jackets with black shirts, slacks and boots.
Their sound is like "the Letterman meet the Seeds." Does anyone else have this record?
I bought the 45 w/ pic sleeve (both still in good shape) from a homeless man for a buck - all the while wondering if the guy was actually "the" Hub Kapp, who'd fallen on hard times, and was selling off his only copy of his own group's record. Neither side was going to put the Beatles out of business, though both shared the same label at the time. "Six Degrees of Hub Kapp & The Wheels" - can anyone shed light on this mystery group? Producer was Dave Axelrod.

    Hub Kapp

This 45 was an early effort by the late great Mike Condello, a well-known
name in the 60s Arizona recording and television scenes. He also put out some amazing Beatles parodies/tributes later on as "Commander Condello's Salt River Navy Band" (a Sgt. Pepper tribute for sure). There is a local CD out with all of Condello's rock material (including the Hub Kapp tracks) that I believe is still available by mailorder from Metro Music.

Still wanna play, huh? This one could be in either this thread or my Canadian one that started the other day - The Great Scots (clad in kilts - gotta be mighty manly to pull that off!) did a swell version of I Ain't No Miracle Worker (which seems to be the garage band tune that always manages to turn out well, whomever lays it down on tape)... Dig it on The Great Lost Great Scots cd from Sundazed from tapes of Mr. Richard Delvy (Challengers kingpin - underrated producer fella IMHO)...

Girls in the garage??? You betcha - check out She - Wants a Piece of You on Big Beat/Ace CDWIKD 199 (another Nuggets From the Golden State series) - Outta Reach has spooky organ and a lotta baaaaaad attitude, dudes! Sliding towards psych here, but still got a nice steady pulse...

Impressive list, I would say. One asterisk* means the track was on a 45 I have but I know of no CD source. ** means a track I added at the last moment, though it's possible in a few instances I missed it and credit should go elsewhere. If so, sorry.

That about puts this one to bed, methinks.

Ed, that's a lotta work you put into that list - thanx! Scary thing is, there's a mountain of tunes we could keep adding to this list... Speaking of adding, could you sneak Sir Winston and the Commons We're Gonna Love onto the list - wasn't that my thread starter a LOOOOONG list ago??? The Sonics made a lotta appearances, and hold onto yer hats if you love Tacoma's finest - Big Beat/Ace has their mitts on the original 2 tracks form Etiquette and is gonna put out STEREO Sonics tracks - peek at their site and check out the March new releases - the Etiquette comp will have The Sonics stuff in twin guns a' blazin' 2 ears at once sound!!!!! Short of the Rhino Northwest Nuggets vinyl with Boss Hoss in stereo, I don't think the stereo tapes have been used in a looooooooong time. More Sonics upgrade news might be in the works - I'll keep pestering and share the results!

Sir Winston is back on the list--it was on the first one I made; musta been typing too fast or something. But, yeah, there's room for more, and as you've doubtless noticed, I added a few we missed(or I did). Looks pretty good, though. Any chance we can get Steve to dabble a little? Ya know, L.A. guy and all, most of this stuff must seem so...unknown to him, though we can assume he knows who the Raiders and Rascals are:D

I'm thinking that a lotta small label stuff could be licensed through Celebrity Licensing (the Challenge stuff immediately comes to mind) - this would be our best bet via Audio Fidelity, but without some decent charters to lure in the typical oldies buyer I don't think it's gonna happen. Steve's S&P label hasn't gotten to the point where tax write-off discs are needed just yet. I'm ready to write the liners when that time comes! :D

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say you won't be disappointed - be patient and you'll be pleasantly surprised! :)
