I bought them both and enjoy the way they sound but the production of some tracks sometimes lends itself to being a little bright. Still they are the best digital versions I’ve heard but nothing earth shattering, imo.
Todd's engineering is sometimes difficult to listen to. Lots of phase "experiments" that make me think there's something wrong with the master or my playback system.
Todd has/had no top end in his hearing. He mixed everything bright. That's why all his productions are that way. That's how the tapes sound.
I like the MFSL. I don’t think the new SACD is that great of an improvement. The SACD sounds more like the original LP (not necessarily a bad thing) from what I remember but the MFSL smooths out a lot of the brightness of Todd’s original mixes, which to me is a good thing.
Something / ? I rate the MFSL gold 2 cd. Really interested in the SACD if it's supposed to be superior. Any other thumbsaloft ?
Question about the cardboard sleeve packaging... How does it compare to japanese mini lp packaging? Is it the same size? Thanks for any insight.
In a head to head comparison, they sounded very similar on my system with the edge to the SACD. The CD layer sounded comparable to the Mofi with a slight difference in brightness.
The packaging is nearly identical to MFSL's SACD cardboard sleeve packaging. Analog Spark did a nice job with these SACDs in both packaging and sound. It's funny this thread got bumped today. I bought these SACDs very recently. I wouldn't wait if you want the Something/Anything SACD. I noticed it's running low in stock at several different retailers and is even sold out on Analog Spark's own website.
No, I do not want to own both. Damn. On my two setups lately, it's been a more bottom end on the vinyl as opposed to the digital setup. So there's that. Then I'm faced with Chris vs. Kevin ? Choose a hero ? The final blow : There's only a $1.07 difference in the 2011 vinyl, and the 2017 SACD. @bmoregnr has me thinking the vinyl in this case. Another example to understand my setups, and there's nothing wrong with my sub (Super Session is a BEAST on SACD) ...another example is the Big Star SACD is anemic in bottom end ( I know that was John Fry's intention ) while my Classic Records vinyl puts Jody's drums in the room (Chris Bellman masterpieces). Sounds like I should choose the...
Sorry, MYKE, I've been in and out of this thread. Are you trying to decide on a version of Something/Anything? I'd be happy to post samples of my Rhino vinyl for you to evaluate if you think that would help.
Thanks, No, I know from experience Chris' work, just like Bernie's is tailor made for my 1978 Jensens. The question is if the SACD is anemic in bass and drums, and from what @bmoregnr said, it sounds like it would be brighter. Since posting, I've thought about it, and the vinyl is likely my best bet. .
Okay, just trying to help. I like the way the vinyl sounds but I know from previous threads that you and I both like Bellman's work.
I like how he's a member here, popping in from time to time. This great bottom end thing has me "rediscovering " both Roy Orbison, and CCR ! Somehow, the bulk of both of their collections was on CD and SACD. Recently getting some choice vinyl of both has really changed how they sound to me, and it's great.
