I'm 40 years old, and Tom Morello is the greatest, most innovative and unique guitarist of my generation.

He is the friggin' Riff Master General, and his solos kick ass while sounding like nothing you've ever heard before.

Older dudes will point to Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Mark Knoplfer, and plenty more. There is no denying that Tom Morello is at the very least, on par with all of those.

Yes, I am a bit stoned right now. But I stand by every word of it.

I have no way to really justify it on a technical basis, but I am going to go with Johnny Marr for my generation.

Guitarists are a dime a dozen. Thankfully.

Never heard of him but I love your enthusiasm. Nice when you can get that excited by a musician.

I cannot stand Tom Morello from the way he wears his guitar too high up right down to his nasty solos. I'm struggling to think of a guitar player I like less.

  10. I like Morello. He understands the history he stands upon, and has the intelligence and ability to carve a place for himself with his deconstructing style.

All these guitarists are great in their own right. Trying to say who's the best is pointless in my opinion.

I'm 53 and I'm going with Trey Anastasio for my generation.

  15. Nah, Morello ain't nothing special - except maybe as a stunt guitarist, able to make funny sounds during leads and as accents.

    Other "younger" guitarists to consider--
    Thurston Moore
    Lee Ranaldo
    Ty Segall
    Nels Cline
    Johnny Greenwood
    St. Vincent
    Jack White
    Billy Corgan
    Johnny Marr
    Bryce Dessner
    Brent Hinds
    Mikael Akerfeldt
    Derek Trucks

Morello is as good as anyone from his age cohort. The competition would be John Frusciante and Johnny Greenwood.

I'll go with Mary Halvorson. She's four years younger than me, so close enough to "my generation."

Not a big fan of Tom Morello. Some great riffs, yes, and he is unique. But I find his effects and noise get annoying before too long.

I'd say Jerry Cantrell is a better guitar player from that generation. Many others too - like Mikael Akerfeldt mentioned above.

It's all subject to one's own tastes of course.

Do you mean born in my generation? Or do you mean who was top dog when I was a teen?

I'm a Gen X'er so if I had to go with the best guitarist from when I was a teen (1982-1989) I'd say George Lynch.

If I'm picking a Gen X guitarist then my answer is probably John 5 or Jerry Cantrell.

I like him ok. I will say this: his guitar solo on the remake of "The Ghost of Tom Joad" made me want to go out and riot in the streets so yeah he's definitely got something.

not that familiar with morello as i never really listened to RATM after a few things i heard and didn't like.
i do like morello's work on springsteen's album "high hopes".

not sure what generation they are and probably one prior to me but richard thompson and lou reed are standouts.
