    Another day: another list:

    http://fridaynightboys300.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/ten-best-war-movies.html

I think once you get into 'historical; and 'period' drama (and I know they all qualify for this to some extent) like Ran, you leave yourself open to all options - like Last of the Mohicans or El Cid or Red Badge of Courage or....

I'm not sure I could come up with ten, but here we go - and in no particular order:

All Quiet on the Western Front
    Salvador
    Catch 22
    Apocalypse Now
    Cross of Iron
    Paths of Glory
    Rome, Open City
    La Grande Illusion
    The Way to the Stars
    Battle of Algiers

    Another ten might be:

    Saving Private Ryan
    The Great Escape
A Bridge Too Far (which I've come to appreciate more)
    The Longest Day
    Das Boot
    M*A*S*H
    A Canterbury Tale
    The Way Ahead
    Went the Day Well
A Matter of Life and Death

Is Catch 22 considered a war film?

    Das Boot (5 hour version)
    Objective Burma
    Steel Helmet
Fixed Bayonets (two Sam Fuller gems)
Gettysburg...if only you could replace Martin Sheen's Robert E Lee with Robert Duvall's from the not-as-good prequel
Gods and Generals. If only "To the Last Full Measure" could be made
    Drums along the Mohawk
    Northwest Passage
    The General
All Quiet on the Western Front. 1980s version with Richard Thomas and Ernest Borgnine isn't bad
    Bridge on the River Kwau

None of that über-realistic stuff for me... My top ten are going to be mainly in the not-so-serious vein.

Casablanca (it has Nazis, so that's close enough for me)
    The Dirty Dozen
    Kelly's Heroes
    Catch-22
    Memphis Belle
    The Beast
    The Last of the Mohicans
    The Wild Geese
    Dr. Strangelove
    Stripes

I've heard so many people say good things about this film that despite it being from 1930 I just bought it on Blu Ray.

I'm a sucker for ANY War movies, especially WWII movies, so picking a top 10 is like picking your favorite child.

Some others I like that are not listed above (I think):

    Stalag 17
    Midway
    Patton
    Tora, Tora, Tora
    The Green Berets
    We Were Soldiers
    Casualties Of War
    The Alamo
    MacArthur
    The Big Red One

If a best war movie list doesn't include Das Boot then it isn't serious.

    End of.

I guess there's a point where you ask yourself which are the ten 'best' war movies and which are the ten you appreciate the most.

If it was the latter, I' d have

    Catch 22
    The Way to the Stars
    A Canterbury Tale
    Paths of Glory
    Cross of Iron
    La Grande Illusion
    The Great Escape
    Went the Day Well
    Das Boot
All Quiet on The Western Front

Lots of good suggestion from other posters, though, and plenty more to consider. The Cruel Sea, for example.
