My list would include many films already mentioned along with The Enemy Below from 1957. Also, if you haven't seen the "Redux" version of Apocalypse Now (2001), it's well worth it. As a grade schooler who loved our dashing young President, I enjoyed PT-109 (1963); saw it with my parents at the drive-in. Finally, because it was the turning point in the Pacific War, Midway (1976) is required viewing.

  3. Glory
    Gettysburg
    Battleground
    Apocalypse Now
    Paths Of Glory
    Das Boot
    Twelve O'clock High
    Bridge on the River Kwai
    Lawrence Of Arabia
    Dr. Strangelove (for comic relief)

And a very honorable mention to the two HBO miniseries, Band Of Brothers and The Pacific.

The Train - 1964. A very underrated war movie, in black and white.

Because it involves soldiers, even though they're inept National Guardsmen, and they're being killed, even though the enemies are Americans, I'll sneak in a long-time favorite from Walter Hill's golden years and nominate Southern Comfort.

I had a friend from Lafayette, Louisiana, which is in the heart of Cajun country. He told me that they made a big deal out of the premiere there, with all the prominent townsfolk gathered to appreciate being featured in a big movie. He said there was a steady exodus from the theatre as the casualties mounted and afterward the remaining crowd soundlessly streamed out of the theatre and went home. They don't use any clips in their promotional videos.

If you're going to include five hours of Das Boot (no argument from me), then you may as well consider the ten hours of Band Of Brothers.

I'd also cast a vote for Lawrence, and River Kwai. We recently watched Battle of Britain, and that certainly needs to be considered. Maybe not in the top ten but near.

I've realised that I've missed out They Were Expendable - and there are a couple more that other posters have reminded me about, so:

All Quiet on the Western Front
    They Were Expendable
    Catch 22
    Apocalypse Now
    Cross of Iron
    Paths of Glory
    Rome, Open City
    La Grande Illusion
    The Way to the Stars
    Battle of Algiers

    The Train
    The Great Escape
A Bridge Too Far (which I've come to appreciate more)
    The Longest Day
    Das Boot
    Salvador
    A Canterbury Tale
    The Way Ahead
    Went the Day Well
    Letters From Iwo Jima

And I now have another ten:

    Saving Private Ryan
    M*A*S*H
A Matter of Life or Death
    Full Metal Jacket
    Thin Red Line
    Platoon
    Gallipoli
    The Bed Sitting Room
    Schindler's List
    Casablanca

The 1979 version with Richard Thomas was just released this week on DVD/BR in its uncut form for the first time. :)

I just picked this up yesterday, and I'm a little ticked off. It claims to be the "uncut edition", and while it does restore about 28 minutes of footage, there's a glaring edit made to a particular scene that was intact on the previous DVD!! It's the scene where the French soldiers are cutting through the barbed wire and get killed by a German grenade... in the previous DVD, you see a French soldier's hand reach up and grab the barbed wire just before the grenade explodes.... when the explosion clears, all that remains of the soldier is part of his arm and his hand, still grasping the barbed wire. It's a grisly image and has always stuck with me. But on the new DVD, this shot is edited and the scene ends just before the explosion clears! The shot of the disembodied arm & hand is missing completely! As soon as I saw it, I knew something looked wrong, so I immediately compared it to the older disc, just in case I was confusing things with the similar scene from the original 1930 film. But sure enough, it was intact on the previous DVD. :(

What a bunch of ridiculous nonsense! They've got a lot of nerve calling it the "uncut edition" when it's blatantly obvious that it's been edited. It's only a second or two of footage, but still... if they're going to advertise something as being "uncut", then it shouldn't be censored in any way! I'm thinking of writing an angry email to Timeless Media and/or Shout Factory to express my disappointment.
